If you’re dreaming about the ultimate South Florida escape—one that blends beachfront relaxation, family-friendly fun, and just the right dose of tropical adventure—then let me introduce (or perhaps re-introduce) you to Islander Resort in the Florida Keys, a newly transformed slice of paradise nestled in the heart of the Florida Keys.
Our family booked this trip eager to check out all the buzz about Islander Resort’s massive renovation in 2024. Let me tell you: it exceeded every single one of our expectations.
4 Things to Love About Islander Resort in the Florida Keys
How to Get There
It takes a little less than 3 hours to drive the 100+ miles south from Boca Raton to Islander Resort in the Florida Keys. The good news is that the drive is absolutely BEAUTIFUL once you get past Miami. There’s something about driving to the Keys, even by car, that makes you feel like you’ve been transported…
Islander Resort in the Florida Keys: A Complete Transformation
Spanning 24 lush, tropical acres in beautiful Islamorada, Islander Resort has recently undergone a full property transformation. Think: a top-to-bottom renovation of all 114 bungalows and suites (which is where my family and I stayed) and 25 Bayside Villas, plus reimagined resort amenities, dining and event spaces. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t your average beachside stay. It was a true Florida Keys experience.
Let’s talk accommodations: we stayed in one of the spacious, bungalow-style retreats with two queen beds, which perfectly balanced that breezy, beachy charm with all the modern touches a mom like me appreciates. I couldn’t get over the pink palm tree closet!
As or the room itself, think soft pastel hues, woven wicker textures, polished wood details, and a private patio for morning coffee or post-beach wine (yes, please). Outdoors, you feel like you’re invited to truly relax between adventures, surrounded by swaying palms and the sound of the surf.
If you’re traveling with a larger group or staying longer (jealous!), check out the Bayside Villas—these two-bedroom townhome-style accommodations offer a cozy living area, full kitchen, private deck, and access to all the resort perks, plus a dedicated Sunset Pool and beach.
Endless Recreational Activities & Relaxation for the Whole Family
Let’s be real—kids need activities, and parents need peace. At Islander Resort, you get both. My 11 year-old daughter #dailybocaavery loved kicking off the day with her bestie at the 9-hole Seaside Links PuttTek putting course, while Modern Boca Dad and I soaked up the views from a lounge chair at the saltwater Terrace Pool (with drink in hand).
We also took advantage of the complimentary Sunday morning yoga while the kids slept in.
There’s a freshwater Oasis Pool, a sand volleyball court, basketball and pickle ball courts, bocce ball, kayaks, paddleboards…a FLOATING AQUA CABANA!!! I could go on. For some real quality time, we loved hopping from activity to activity, laughing and competing against each other surrounded by the most incredible tropical scenery.
And if your idea of a perfect day involves doing absolutely nothing? The hammocks tucked into garden alcoves and new shaded cabanas have your name on them.
The Highlight of Our Trip: Islamorada Sandbar Adventure
The most unforgettable part of our stay? Booking a private excursion to the famous Islamorada Sandbar with Clearly Unique Charters. The VIP vibes start the moment you realize you’re being picked up right from the resort’s private dock (yes, you read that right).
Crystal-clear water floating, rum punch, tunes playing, and the Keys’ unbeatable energy made it a day we’ll be talking about for ages. If you’re heading to Islander Resort, this experience is an absolute must.
Flavors of the Keys: On-Site Dining
Let’s not forget about the food! The resort’s restaurant Tides Beachside Bar served up fresh Florida Mango Salsa, smoky Jerk Chicken Wings, and tropical cocktails right by the water—it became our go-to lunch spot.
For breakfast and dinner, Drift on the Beach was a favorite, especially the stone crab claws (made it in time for the end of the season!), beet salad (OMG. We ordered it both nights.) and fresh-caught seafood that truly celebrates local flavors. And, don’t sleep on their key lime pie!
Because there was a wedding booked while we were there, we didn’t get a chance to experience Coccoloba for fish tacos and lobster rolls during the day, or Sandy’s, a new thatched-roof bar that looked perfect for evening cocktails. But, keep them on your vacation radar!
Why Islander Resort in the Florida Keys Is Modern Boca Mom-Approved
There’s something magical about the Islander Resort in Islamorada. It offers the dreamy island vibes Boca Raton families (and their winter visitors) crave with the convenience and luxury touches that make all the difference when traveling with kids. This spring getaway was exactly what our family needed. I just wish my in-laws could have joined us from Maine!
Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, an action-packed family vacation, or a multi-gen trip with the grandparents, Islander Resort in the Florida Keys checks every box.
MBMom Tip: Book early—especially during peak seasons like spring break. And don’t forget to reserve that boat ride to the sandbar!
