Is the Boca Raton Museum of Art Good for Families? 5 Reasons to Visit

As Modern Boca Mom, I’m always on the lookout for enriching and unique family activities. So, I’m thrilled to share one of my favorite cultural gems right here in South Florida: the Boca Raton Museum of Art. It’s a place where art comes to life, giving you and your family a fun day out that’s both educational and entertaining. And with their newest exhibition, “Splendor & Passion: Baroque Spain and Its Empire,” there’s no better time to plan a visit!

Why the Boca Raton Museum of Art is Good for Families

Located in the heart of Mizner Park, the Boca Raton Museum of Art stands out, in my opinion, as a top destination for family outings. Don’t think of it as “staring at artwork hanging on a wall”; it’s about experiencing priceless artistic creations together as a family, sparking curiosity, and fostering a lifelong love of culture and creativity. The museum was actually designed with families in mind, offering a variety of programs and activities that work to engage visitors of all ages.

Family-Friendly Programs and Activities

The museum frequently hosts family-friendly events that make art accessible and enjoyable for kids and adults alike. Some of our favorites are smART, Art Tales and Creation Station. These events provide a fantastic opportunity for children to explore their artistic talents and learn about different art forms in a supportive environment.

Splendor & Passion: A Journey Through Baroque Spain

In Fall 2024 and Winter 2025, the Boca Raton Museum of Art is hosting a spectacular exhibition titled “Splendor & Passion: Baroque Spain and Its Empire.” Having visited opening weekend, I can 100% confirm it is a visual feast, showcasing the opulence, vibrant colors and drama of Baroque art.

Featuring masterpieces from the Spanish Golden Age, including works by legendary artists like El Greco, Diego Velázquez, and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, this exhibition is a journey through history that families won’t want to miss.

We particularly loved the room featuring artistic activities geared towards Boca’s younger set. Whether you’d prefer to take a crack at creating your own still life painting, try matching emoji emotions with faces from Spanish masterpieces or taking a costumed photo in the throne room of a Madrid palace, it’s all there and a ton of fun!

Educational Opportunities

The museum’s commitment to education extends beyond the gallery walls. For families who want to make the most of their visit, guided tours offer deeper insights into the artworks and their historical contexts. These tours are a great way for children to learn about art history and cultural influences in a fun and engaging way.

Additionally, the museum’s educational resources are designed to enhance the learning experience. Families can request activity sheets and educational guides that complement the galleries, making it easier to discuss and reflect on the art together.

Cultural Enrichment

Visiting the Boca Raton Museum of Art is more than just a day trip; it’s an amazing opportunity for your family to dive headfirst into a world of art and culture. With a collection that features a little bit of everything–from contemporary pieces to huge sculptures and captivating photography, there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy.

There are two other exhibitions (in addition to Splendor & Passion) at the Boca Raton Museum of Art this fall & winter: Félix de la Concha and Legacy: Gifts from the Mayers and Friedman Collection, the latter being the museum‘s founding exhibition thanks to generous donations from the Mayer and Friedman families. We were able to check them out during our visit as well and they are expertly curated and such a great addition to the Museum.

Introducing our kiddos to the world of art is one of the most valuable gifts we can give them. It sparks their imagination, sharpens their critical thinking and helps them see the world from different perspectives, which is more important than ever these days.
