Overhand or tomahawk? Stark or Targaryen? Beer or wine? These are the terms that are commonplace at a sweet new venue dedicated to the art of axe throwing in Boca Raton. If you’re looking for a really fun group or family bonding activity to do this season, then this blog post is for you!
Since Modern Boca Dad and I are obsessed with Game of Thrones (like the rest of the world), I stumbled across Game of Axes in Boynton Beach, and now Boca Raton, on Instagram. I sent them a direct message with some questions and the owner got back to me personally about this fascinating sport that I knew very little about. He also invited me (and a group of 11 of my closest friends) for a friendly, Friday night axe-throwing competition complete with polite beverages and plenty of GOT-style photo opps. Spoiler alert: we had a BLAST!
Axe Throwing in Boca Raton | Game of Axes
Going to Maine every summer, Modern Boca Dad and I are no stranger to trying adventurous sports. We’ve mastered skeet shooting and archery, so axe throwing was honestly the next logical step for us…right?
Axe throwing is quite simple. It can also be learned quickly thanks to the “axe-masters” (coaches of sorts) that the venue will provide your group. Groups can be booked with 6 or more people or 5 people and under at different hourly rates. They also host private events if you’re interested.
The Rundown
When you arrive at Game of Axes, the first thing you’ll notice is the door is locked. You don’t want any ol’ rando walking in and messing with people and a bunch of axes, right? You’ll also walk over to a bank of iPads and sign a waiver of liability. Makes sense. We did the same thing when we went indoor skydiving.
The youngest age that’s allowed to throw is 6 and of course, you must be 21+ to indulge in any beer or wine on site. Game of Axes also doesn’t serve food, but you are welcome to bring your own or order in. I think that’s great, especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion by axe throwing in Boca Raton!
The Game of Axe Throwing
Once your group has ordered a round from the bar (not included in your fee btw) and your dedicated axe master confirms everyone is wearing closed toe shoes (necessary), it’s time to get started!
You’ll get coached on how to stand and where to throw. You’ll also receive instructions on safety. OBVIOUSLY. After that, you’ll get some chalk on your hands and some practice throws in and the Game of Axes competition begins!
Each target is made of actual 2 by 10 wood planks. They truly have to replace them several times per night. And, it’s pretty challenging to get your axe to stick to the board. But once you find your sweet spot and plant your feet: BULLS EYE. 🙂
All in all, this is such a fun activity. The novelty of Game of Axes will certainly outlast the Game of Thrones series. And if you find yourself really having a knack for the sport, they have leagues you can join too! Thank you to Game of Axes for hosting us!
