Having houseguests is one of our biggest joys in life–I’m being totally serious! Now that Modern Boca Dad and I are lucky enough to have an actual guest room at home (instead of having visitors crash on our NYC couch or air mattress), it’s become our mission to make our guests feel as comfortable as possible. From a newly remodeled bathroom to comfy pillows, sheets and custom curtains in Boca from Excell in Design Group, our goal is to show our family and friends how much we appreciate them when they visit us.
Boca Guest Room Makeover BEFORE
Our former guest room furniture was not horrible. It just wasn’t our style anymore. Modern Boca Dad and I have really fallen in love with mid-century modern décor in recent years and every part of our house reflects that…except the guest room. So, we posted it all on Facebook Marketplace one Saturday morning and it was sold by 4pm! We were officially decorating the room from scratch.
I was especially excited to partner with Leslie Excell from Excell in Design Group to replace the outdated slider door curtain with custom curtains in Boca from her company! More on that below…
DIY “Board & Batten”
Before we moved in the new furniture and textiles, I knew I wanted to add an accent wall to the space. Enter DIY board & batten! Except, without the board. It really isn’t needed if your walls are in good shape.
My husband, aka Handy Andy, and I came up with a pattern/spacing plan for the boards. Then he measured and picked them up (and even had them cut!) at Home Depot. A nail gun, some caulking and bright white paint later, we had our “board & batten” accent wall.
I think it turned out pretty nicely!
Boca Guest Room Makeover AFTER
Because we sold all of the old furniture, we needed new EVERYTHING. From a bed, nightstands, dresser and more, I couldn’t wait to start picking out furniture for our new and improved guest room!
I love white (like any basic Instagram influencer LOL), but knew I needed some wood tones included to balance it all and complement the floor tile. Links to where I purchased everything are below!
- BED: Ashley Homestore. It’s called the: AVERY LT BEIGE UPH PANEL HB/FB/RAILS. It requires a mattress and box spring- FYI.
- NIGHTSTANDS: Overstock.com. The walnut/white versions we have are sold out, but the all white version is in stock.
- RUG: So many size options on Overstock.com.
- BEDDING
We also purchased custom cut glass tops for the nightstands and dresser from local Boca Raton business Joe Roth Glass. The glass will protect the wood from moisture/spills and honestly it just makes the furniture all look so much more expensive! 😉

- FIDDLELEAF FIG: it’s faux by Christopher Knight!
- PLANT BASKET
- ALARM CLOCK
- WALL SCONCES: Handy Andy actually wired these, so we could plug them into the wall- FYI

All of the bookcase décor pretty much came from Z. Gallerie in Mizner Park. For the coffee table books, I simply shopped my living room!

Custom Curtains in Boca Raton
The pièce de résistance: our custom curtains! Leslie Excell of Excell in Design Group heard about our little home design project and wanted to jump in to create some amazing custom blackout curtains for our slider doors. I was thrilled!
I’ve known Leslie personally for many years via FemCity Boca/Delray and was so pumped because I finally had a project for her.
How gorgeous did these curtains turn out?!? There are actually little flecks of gold sewn into the fabric…
Excell in Design Group
South Florida’s Excell In Design Group delivers innovative window treatments, bedding, and upholstery solutions. You may have seen their beautiful work at Farmer’s Table and the Wyndham Boca Raton!
They are a full service drapery workroom to the trade of residential and commercial interior design professionals (unless you ask really nicely, like me!). They provide expert consultations, quality manufacturing, and professional installation.
Even though we did the installation ourselves, Leslie walked us through in and helped us choose pins, rings and a new rod to hang our custom curtains. I think she was pleased with the final look!
I am so happy with how everything came together. We’ve actually now nicknamed the space our “Hotel Guest Room” because it looks and feels that luxe!
But the real question is: Who will stay with us next? 🙂
