As 2017’s Hurricane Irma was rolling into town, so were our new kitchen cabinets. Great timing, right? Modern Boca Dad, now better known locally as Handy Andy Boca, spent an entire afternoon dragging boxes of brand new white cabinets from our garage into our guest room to make sure not a drop of rising floodwaters got anywhere near them. This Boca Raton kitchen makeover was our BIGGEST investment in our home to date and I desperately wanted it to turn out beautifully!
Spoiler alert: it did. The bulk of the project was completed before the holidays that year. We suffered little damage from Irma, thankfully, and Handy Andy did the install himself. Since that time, we’ve added a sparkly backsplash, wine cooler and strip lighting under the upper cabinets. We’re even planning on building a bar to round out our Boca Raton kitchen makeover! The ShelfGenie process
Our renovation may have been full on DIY, but ShelfGenie spoiled us with their white-glove service as we brainstormed improvements to our current kitchen layout. When you book a free consultation with ShelfGenie, they’ll send one of their talented designers (in South Florida, we worked with Patrick Osborne- such a great guy!) to your home at a time that’s convenient for you. I made sure Modern Boca Dad was also going to be there since he does the bulk of the cooking.
In addition to a drool-worthy catalog, Patrick brought samples of ShelfGenie’s Gilde-Out shelving in all the different wood finishes you can choose from. Did you know each shelf can hold up to 100 lbs? They can also increase your storage capacity up to 50%. As former New Yorkers, this was music to our ears!
Patrick also brought his laptop, so he could create 3-D renderings of the different shelving solutions we were interested in. It was really cool. The hardest part about the whole appointment was narrowing down what we wanted to do to stay within our budget!

- Under the sink
- The kitchen island
- Serving tray and cutting board cabinet

What happens next?
Our designer took the initial measurements for our project, but a professional ShelfGenie installer also popped by for a few minutes after the order was placed to confirm all sizing for our storage transformation. About a month later, we received a call to schedule our home storage install and the rest is history. Our lovely installer, Mauricio, made sure to protect our floors with blankets. He also asked me a ton of questions to make sure all of my kitchenware would fit properly and was in and out in less than 4 hours. It was a lovely experience.
What does my kitchen have to show for it?
Magical, magical Glide-Out shelving and a complete kitchen storage transformation! Can you believe these before and after shots? Everything I own is now easily within reach. I love it!
We have so much more vertical storage now and nothing in my cavernous cabinets can hide from me. It’s truly a kitchen dream come true. And of course, now I am dying to do my upstairs bathrooms. Calling Handy Andy…and ShelfGenie to pull it off!
