Seriously, WTF is Common Core Math?

Heads up MBMoms! You may or may not have kids in school yet, but my least favorite subject (cough, cough MATH) is now NOTHING like the math we used to do years ago. Oh joy.

It’s now called: Common Core Math.

You might have seen this recent photo on Facebook— you know, the funny dad from Ohio who wrote a check using Common Core?

According to tutoring experts Cender Scholars, “Common Core Math is essentially a foreign language to most parents and almost virtually impossible to help children with  their math homework/studying at night. When a parent tries to get involved to help, they often mistakenly get them even more confused.”

Ok now. The last thing I want to do is teach #dailybocaavery the incorrect way to do her (future) math homework and bring her 10 steps backward. If your child is struggling with math, you might want to consider bringing in an expert.

Cender Scholars math tutors connect with the student’s teachers to see and evaluate the areas that they are struggling with and bridge the gap to help the student make gains.

They are very different from your cookie cutter tutoring company because Cender Scholars realize that every child learns in a different way. So, they make every effort to teach each student in the way that works best for them. Having the tutors collaborate with teachers and parents helps to create an individualized education plan for the child.

Libby Nelson of Vox released a terrific video that helps anyone over the age of 20 understand the new way Common Core does math. I highly recommend you watch it.

Watch it!

Now that you’ve watched the video, it’s time for a Pop Quiz!

Q. Will your kids learn traditional math on top of Common Core in school?

The answer is: YES! Your kids will still learn to use traditional algorithms to solve math problems in addition to Common Core’s “number sense.”

Q. What should you do if you find yourself unable to help your child with their new-fangled math homework?

Easy. Don’t get frustrated! Call Cender Scholars (561-212-6926) or visit them online to find out more information regarding their professional math tutoring: http://www.cenderscholars.com/

MOMpreneur Monday: JLM Communications

MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.

Happy Monday Modern Boca Moms! Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.

Today’s featured entrepreneur is…Jennifer Martinez, president and owner of JLM Communications, a full service public relations, event planning and marketing firm.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you started JLM Communications…

I love being an independent public relations professional. It gives me the time I need to enjoy my family (and all the activities my children have! Whew!). I am a naturally “busy” person so having lots of projects and activities works for me.

What challenges did you face when starting your business?

I had just had my second daughter and was working a full time job. I wanted to have more flexible hours so I could spend more time with my family…and to make sure I didn’t have to miss any of my children’s activities.

I decided to freelance a bit and test the waters. It turned out to be a great move. Now, as I celebrate the 4th anniversary of JLM Communications, I realize it was the best decision!

I have wonderful clients, many of who have grown to be friends, and am able to work around my family’s schedule.

What is unique about your agency?

No two days are the same. I can be running from a gala to a photo shoot (in dead sea salt) to walking a construction site. You never know what to expect next!

It’s exciting and fun though. It helps me stay creative and each project inspires me. That is what I love about my job. I am able to be creative, create partnerships, and help to find those “fun” stories and angles that help to create memorable events for clients as well as getting them media coverage.

Why should MBMom readers become your clients/customers?

I would LOVE MBMom readers to follow me on social media! I’m always posting about great client events and I’d love for them to take advantage.

I’d also like to learn more about your readers. There may be some great partnerships we can create together!

JM Making Strides Team 2014

What exciting things are coming up for you and your business?

I am excited to be assisting with the communications for the upcoming Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk (Oct 17th at the Meyer Amphitheater at 9:00 a.m.) and equally excited to be named a 2016 Warrior in Pink for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

I am proud to be a breast cancer survivor and want to work to help others in their fight.
What do you LOVE about living in South Florida?

What’s not to love? We’ve got amazing weather year-round and there is always something to do.

It is a wonderful place to raise my children and we are lucky enough to have many friends and family here to enjoy life with!

MOMpreneur Monday: Moms Pump Here App

MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.

Happy Monday Modern Boca Moms! Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.

Today’s featured MOMpreneur is…Priya Nembhard, co-founder of the Moms Pump Here app.

Moms Pump Here App Modern Boca Mom Featured

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you launched the Moms Pump Here app

I’m a serial entrepreneur who still believes I can change the world. Being a mom is probably one of the biggest reasons why I pursued entrepreneurship.

I want to leave a legacy for my children and be a role model for them, so they believe in their hearts that they too can change the world.

So my sons know what a strong, positive woman looks like and so my daughter has a template she can look up to. Although entrepreneurship is very much about taking risk, the biggest risk would be not risking it for them. Being an entrepreneur also means flexibility– to be present in their lives, to do homework, take them for mommy dates and be there for them when they need me.

In addition to Moms Pump Here, I also co-founded a non-profit in Miami, The EDGE Charitable Foundation, because I wanted the world to be a better place for my children (all children).

What challenges did you face when starting your business?

My business partner, Kim Harrison, and I are both moms of 3. We both breastfed and breast pumped for our children.

Kim contacted me one day complaining about the horrible experience she had looking for a place to pump at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan, while attending a conference (I was living in Miami at the time). She had to resort to using a bathroom stall. We both thought that no mom should have to go through that.

No one would even think of eating in a bathroom, so why should moms have to nurse their children or prepare their food in one? So, we committed to finding a solution for moms like us and Moms Pump Here was born!

(Note: Kim has gone back every year since 2012, when we were founded, to the Javits Center and little by little, it has gotten better. Most recently they had a small dedicated space, not a 5 star arrangement, but someplace a mom could nurse or pump.)

What is unique about your app and why should MBMom readers download it ASAP?

We are the first online GPS resources for moms to find, rate and share places to breastfeed and breast pump. Created by moms for moms, Moms Pump Here app, provides moms with choices.

It’s a woman’s natural and federal right to breastfeed in public and private places anywhere she is allowed to be. With Moms Pump Here app, a mom can breastfeed in public or look for one of our locations. Additionally, she can also breast pump in private. All locations have a short review about what is available at each location or if nothing is available.

Using GPS, moms can search nursing room locations within a 200 mile radius of where they stand or in areas they may be traveling too. The locations include retail stores, sports complexes, airports, hospitals, universities and more.

In addition, they can also add a nursing room location via the app by submitting an image, details and contact information for the location. All new or submitted locations are vetted by our team through, research, calls and mom forums.

What exciting things are coming up for you and your business?

We are rolling out international locations such as Canada and Australia this fall. We will also be at the Expecting Parent and Baby Expo in New York in October and will be updating the App with new mommy friendly features in the near future.

What did you love most about living in South Florida?

I loved the weather, people and laid back lifestyle. Grateful for the experiences and the people I had the pleasure of working with. We lived in Miami for 8 years and moved to New York City following the death of my father to care for my mother. We anticipate moving back to Miami in a few years. My three children miss it tremendously and ask frequently when we are coming back.

Our earliest press came from South Florida (Miami Herald and Miami Community Newspaper)! And, I frequently travel back for my foundation.

Waterstone Boca Raton, Your Vacation Zone

Sponsored by the Waterstone Boca Raton

Last week was one for the books. Between all of #dailybocaavery’s fall activities starting, work deadlines and the “will it/won’t it hit South Florida” Tropical Storm Erika, I felt like I was in constant G-O mode. I may be an MBMom, but I’m also human and by Thursday, I was completely exhausted.

Every once in awhile, us bloggers get invited to experience a hotel or vacation destination for consideration in an upcoming blog feature. I’m not going to lie– it’s totally fun, but coordinating these things along with childcare and work schedules can be complicated. Like any regular vacation or staycation.

Waterstone Boca Raton

Waterstone Boca

Boca Raton’s Waterstone Resort & Marina – A DoubleTree by Hilton invited our family for a little overnight and let’s just say I was pretty much sprinting to the car with my overnight bag by 5PM. We had Avery with us for a little at the Waterstone Boca while and then asked my mom to pick her up, so we could enjoy our dining experience at Boca Landing in peace.

Boca Landing Dining Room Waterstone Boca Raton

Keep in mind I personally think the Waterstone Boca, even though it’s marketed with more of a cool “South Beach vibe,” is child-friendly.

We stayed at the hotel (on our own dime) over Memorial Day Weekend and had a blast eating (and drinking) by the pool and even ordered food to-go and ate on the balcony of our room when it was Avery’s bedtime. There are even water sport options for older kids. So either way you slice it, I dig the Waterstone. I see it as my little Boca vacation zone!

Waterstone Boca Raton

Clearly, #modernbocadad agrees.

When we arrived at the Waterstone Boca, our Boca Mom car was valeted and we were greeted with champagne and cold drink options. Fancy!

And how beautiful is this Waterstone Boca lobby? Even if you’re not staying at the hotel and are just visiting for drinks or dinner, this artsy gorgeousness is what you get to walk through every visit.

Waterstone Boca Raton

Waterstone Boca Raton

From the lobby, we were shown to our beautiful room with a full view of the intracoastal AND ocean on the 9th floor. The last time we were at the Waterstone Boca, we stayed on the Lake Boca side of the hotel, which was just as beautiful.

We particularly enjoyed sitting on the balcony (#dailybocaavery too). It almost felt like we were on a cruise ship!

Once grandma picked up Avery for the night, it was time for cocktails and dinner at Boca Landing!

Waterstone Boca Raton

Using locally-sourced ingredients to produce a variety of dishes and cocktails, Boca Landing provides guests with a distinctive food style conveying “just off the boat” elements.

Waterstone Boca Raton

Executive Chef Matt Mixon (who met with us personally) brings a balance of superior cuisine, innate knowledge and a deep passion to the restaurant and culinary offerings of the hotel. With unprecedented, 180 degree views of Lake Boca, Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, Boca Landing restaurant provides guests with upscale dining in an art-inspired, water-centric atmosphere.

Waterstone Boca Raton

Boca Landing features seafood caught off of Florida’s coast along with influences from Mixon’s French and Italian heritage. The menu showcases creative small plates, a selection of simply prepared fish and meats and delectable side options made to order and easy to share.

And you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel to dine at this delicious restaurant- FYI. 3 hours later, this is what we sampled…

Our top picks? The Tuna Tartar, Sea Scallops and the Double Cut Pork Chop. Holy Moly. Chef Matt told us that the menu will be changing soon (for the season), but those items will stay on because they have been such hits. Thank you for having us Chef Matt!

After dinner, perhaps you might feel like having another drink al fresco at the Waterstone Bar & Grill or taking a dip in the hotel pool? We had big ambitions for the evening, but ended up heading back to our room and going right to sleep. I know. So boring. Our stay at the Waterstone went way too fast.

Waterstone Boca Raton

Waterstone Boca Raton

And how cool is this? You can borrow bikes to ride along A1A. I haven’t seen a bike sharing program in Boca yet! Great idea Waterstone!

Waterstone Boca Raton

Our little weekday escape did the trick. It recharged my mom batteries and reminded me why I love “staycation-ing” in Boca so much.

Why leave the zone if you don’t have to?

MOMpreneur Monday: blue pelican

MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.

Happy Monday Modern Boca Moms! Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.

Today’s featured MOMpreneur is…Katie Spitaletto, founder of blue pelican, a popular kid’s clothing line.

Tell us a little bit about the “why’s and how’s” of how you started blue pelican?

I started blue pelican as a small branch of my mom’s line, Hickity Pickity. She had been selling quilted pillows and vintage enamelware pot lids turned into bird feeders at The Snappy Turtle and The Delray Affair.

Blue Pelican Modern Boca Mom 01

I had always been artistic, so I started painting picture frames and mirrors, and making resin bracelets and necklaces out of vintage Lilly Pulitzer fabric. That was about 12 years ago, and my life has changed a lot since then!

I used to mostly make things for ladies, but once I had my daughter Ellie (in 2008), I began making handprinted baby clothing. My mom, the proud grandma that she is, also started making more and more baby and children’s clothing. Two years later my son, Ezra, came along and we added a boy’s line! Now, we are mostly known for kid’s clothes. We do sell things for ladies, and I have a line of painted wood art as well.

Blue Pelican Modern Boca Mom 04

What makes the blue pelican brand so unique?

One of the reasons blue pelican is so unique is because each piece of clothing is handmade and with great attention to detail.

I use vintage Lilly (which is so hard to find, but so worth the hunt!) to make a wide variety of items: pom pom shorts, bows, tops and dresses, and I handprint items with stamps of my own design.
Blue Pelican Modern Boca Mom 06

I’ve always tried to make cool clothes for kids that are comfortable and interesting. I find my art show customers come back every year, and they always say, “My daughter wore that dress as much as she could! We have to get another one for this summer!” I think that is the best compliment I could get!

Blue Pelican Modern Boca Mom 03

What’s coming up with your business?

My clothing is so awesome because there is only one source: me! The fabrics are so rare, and the stamps are one of a kind. I’m always adding new fabrics and stamped designs in different colorways.

Right now I’m working on a run of vintage hot pink long tops that are to die for and I’m carving a series of whale stamps for the handprints. I’m going to have several new dress and tank styles coming up, as well as the most popular—my seahorse dress!

We do three art shows every year (Artigras in Jupiter, Juno Art Fest in Juno Beach, and The Delray Affair in Delray Beach), and we also sell items at The Snappy Turtle in Delray Beach.

Blue Pelican Modern Boca Mom 02

What do you love most about living in South Florida?

I was born here in South Florida, and I’ve always loved it. I had a brief run over to Texas for my college studies at Baylor (Go Bears!), and then I came right back home. I love spending my days at the beach, paddleboarding and snorkeling with my kids. There are a million beautiful places in the world, but I only want to live here!

Alligator Alley Open at the Palm Beach Zoo

At the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society’s Alligator Alley, guests are invited to get up close and personal with Fred and Wilma, the Zoo’s American alligators at their newly renovated viewing area.

Wilma Palm Beach Zoo 1

The first in a series of redesigned and reimagined habitats for the current Florida Region exhibit, the new, up close, viewing platform, provides a panoramic view of the lush habitat the alligators call home.

Alligator Alley at PB Zoo

The Zoo’s just completed renovations include the all new Keeper Talk & Presentation Platform, 360 degree viewing of the Alligator Habitat and an off-exhibit Alligator Holding Area. This project has been made possible by long time donors, Michele & Howard Kessler. Their generous support has helped continue to provide quality care for Fred, the Zoo’s 12.5-foot long male and his mate, 8-foot long Wilma, both born in 1988.

Native to Florida, the American alligator is an example of a species that has recovered thanks to careful management and conservation efforts. By the middle of the 20th century, American alligator populations were severely depleted and in 1967, were listed under the Endangered Species Preservation Act.  The Palm Beach Zoo is proud to be a part of this effort and continue to educate and inform people about these magnificent creatures.

Toddler Training: How to Transition to a Toddler Bed…Successfully!

I feel like I’ve failed at an epic level recently at certain “Toddler Training” tasks. I’m a little frustrated with the progress #dailybocaavery is (not) making at swim class and our first try at potty training didn’t exactly pan out.

But one thing we’re #winning at? The TODDLER BED TRANSITION.

Bye bye crib! Hello tiny bed.

2015-06-30 19.16.23It’s too cute, right?

We found this bad boy on sale at Target (you can find it for $69.99 on Amazon.com HERE) and #modernbocadad couldn’t resist the purchase. The mattress FYI- is directly from the crib.

I had originally wanted to keep #dailybocaavery in her crib (cage?) as long as possible. We have a two-story house and my mind went to the darkest, worst possible scenario in terms of transitioning her.

No, I wasn’t worried about her stumbling in the dark and falling down a flight of stairs in the middle of night. I was terrified of the access she would now have to our bedroom.

A tiny person staring you down in silence in the middle of the night is actually quite terrifying.

Lucky for us, Avery is a loud walker (a stomper essentially), so we hear her coming a mile away. And she loves being able to get into and out of her bed on her own. She was ready.

So, how did we transition her?

1. We made a big deal about the “Big Kid Bed.”

Let your child help pick out new bedding and choose which stuffed animal(s) they want to sleep with. This amazing “bed in a bag” set is from aden + anais and I am obsessed.

2015-06-30 12.23.52

Why you ask? First off, the top sheet is attached to the fitted sheet, so your child cannot tear apart the bed in his/her sleep. Little did I know that would be a key selling feature.

See? The bottom is attached.

Secondly, it comes with a training pillow. This set comes with a small, flat one, so it’s a good starting point.

The comforter is also very lightweight. That’s a South Florida win in my book!

The set is made with 100% cotton muslin– guaranteed you received one or more of those aden + anais blankets when your child was a baby.

2015-06-30 19.16.32
The ‘for the birds’ pattern

The aden + anais classic toddler bed in a bag retails for $149.95 and the organic version runs for $169.95. You can purchase HERE.

2. We read about Elmo’s experience.

Our daughter, like many toddlers and preschoolers out there, relates to Elmo on so many levels. Reading about his “Big Kid Bed” transition was a great idea and explained the why’s and how’s at her level.

Elmo Big Enough for a Bed Book

MBMom Tip: Make sure to read this book WHILE your child sits in their bed. Stay consistent. Once per night is great until your kid is comfortable in his/her new digs. 🙂

3. We installed a night light.

If our daughter does get up in the middle of the night, I’m now confident she can find her way to our bedroom without crashing into a baby gate head first.

Night Light

Not saying that this happened to her/us, but…yeah, that happened to us. Oops.

Along with a lot of love + patience, your child should be sleeping (and hopefully staying) in their new bed before you know it.

2015-08-17 00.16.33

Sweet dreams!

MOMpreneur Monday: Milly Taylor Realtor, The Keyes Company

MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.

Happy Monday Modern Boca Moms! Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.

Today’s featured Modern Boca MOMpreneur is…Milly Taylor, Realtor and Certified Relocation Specialist  with The Keyes Company.
Milly Taylor Realty on Modern Boca Mom

A little update on Milly since we last featured her in 2015…

Milly Taylor is lovely.

She not only has a background in Sales/Marketing in the Hospitality Industry, but in the Administration & Operations of an Assisted Living & Retirement Community. And, since joining Keyes Real Estate in 2011: Milly has ranked in the Top 10 among 2,600 agents. She is also recipient of the Keyes President’s Council Award and the Keyes Circle of Excellence Award.

Impressive Milly! Tell us about yourself and a bit more about your professional background and Milly Taylor Realty…

I was born in the Dominican Republic, raised in New York City and speak fluent Spanish. Now, I have lived in South Florida for more than twenty years.

My career began in real estate over 14 years ago because I felt there was a need to enhance customer service in this profession. Since my background was in the Hospitality industry, I knew that offering a sincere, liable, trustworthy service would be my forte. I wanted to make this field more “personable”.

What, as a Realtor, makes you different from the rest?

What makes my business unique is there are 6 “niches” that I cater to:

  • Firefighters
  • Veterans- Military
  • Police Officers
  • Spanish speaking buyers/sellers
  • Seniors
  • Relocations
  • Buyers and Sellers

All of these markets hold a special place in my heart. First, because my two sons, Andy & Fred, are both Firefighters. Fred with Orange County and Andy with Palm Beach County. Secondly, my stepson Jason is a Palm Beach County Sheriff.

Milly Taylor Realty on Modern Boca Mom

Lastly, my daughter Cristina is the Director of Dental Research at Nova University. She relocated to South Florida from the Dominican Republic. Andy also served in the Military for 5 years, so I understand how stressful it can be being away from family and moving into an area where everything is new.

Milly Taylor Realty on Modern Boca Mom

My specialty lies in assisting our brave men & women who have served this country and continue to do so every day in every part of our Nation. Vets, Firefighters and Police Officers…I go above & beyond to serve these clients.

That is remarkable. Well done. Tell us a little bit more about your other niches…

Because of my background in Senior Living, I’ve created a “Senior Program” within our company. This program caters to seniors who are downsizing and moving to a more supervised environment. Most often than not, their adult children live out of state.

We become an extension of their family and oversee everything from packing, coordinating the move, listing their current home, coordinating repairs, cleaning, etc. And most importantly, maintaining a strict line of communication between the adult child, the community where the parent is moving to and attorneys who may be involved. We consider ourselves the piece of the puzzle holding everything together. Our goal is to make this transition a smooth and stress-free move.

Another of my passions are Relocation families.

Having relocated many times myself, I understand the complexities of moving to a new area. It is very exciting, but can also be stressful with so much to do in a relatively short period of time.

Milly Taylor Realty on Modern Boca Mom

I’m aware of the concerns relocations have i.e. selling their current home, buying a new home, finding new schools and coordinating the move. I take my responsibility with families relocating very seriously. Understandably, they are depending on me to show them homes with good value, near great schools, and in great neighborhoods.

My services also include: where to get your license and vehicle tag transferred, explaining about our Homestead Exemption, where to shop, where to dine, extracurricular activities for children and so much more!

Recently, i’ve been working with buyers and sellers anywhere from Boca to Tequesta, anywhere in the State of Florida, and anywhere around the Globe! We can place any buyer and seller in the hands of an experienced, savvy Realtor anywhere around the Globe.

Milly Taylor Realty on Modern Boca Mom

Clients know that I will take care of everything, no matter how complex or trivial. My success is a direct result of my extensive experience, knowledge of the local market, and my willingness to go that extra mile. I will take you from start to the finish line and be at your side every step of the way; guaranteeing your complete satisfaction.

What do you love most about living in South Florida?

I’ve lived in South Florida for over 20 years. I love the friendliness of the people, the open areas, the beaches….and yes of course, the climate!

Mommy Facebook Recos Aren’t Always the Best. Here’s Why…says Cender Scholars

If you’re a local mom with a Facebook account, chances are you’re a member of one or more Facebook “groups.” I belong to several…at least 10+, some of which where I’ve learned to turn the notifications OFF. (I’m looking at you Mamarama)

Facebook Logo

Lately (and especially with the new school year starting), I’ve seen a lot of requests for tutors– all kinds! Math, foreign language, piano, sports, you name it! And some of the suggestions have been questionable.

My neighbor, this friend, my retired grandfather…

I don’t know why you would chance the success of your child and not be 100% sure you’re hiring a qualified tutor.

In talking with local entrepreneur and founder of Cender Scholars, Erica Cender, “it is imperative that your child clicks with his or her tutor. Finding a tutor that makes kids feel safe, nurtured, encouraged and empowered is what you should look for in a tutoring company.”

Tree with Cender Scholars Logo

And finding one at the BEGINNING of the school year can often be way more effective than waiting until you see your child struggling with a particular subject. It is a wonderful thing to build a rapport with your tutor and a strong bond while the year is fresh. And tutors can plan lessons and sessions to coincide with what students are learning in class. That’s a win/win for everyone!

Here are some tools you might find useful in finding the perfect match, dubbed the 4 R’s:
  • Real – lessons are authentic, concrete, and understandable.
  • Relevant – lessons relate to the students’ life experiences and are relatable.
  • Rigorous – lessons tackle the problem areas the student is having difficulty with and helping them not view them as hurdles.
  • Relationships – tutors develop a trusting work environment that encourages the student to succeed.
