How to Savor Spring Evenings in Boca Raton with Your Family

Longer days and lighter evenings are here, which means it’s time to move those dinners outdoors!  With the recent ‘spring forward’, we gained an extra hour of daylight in the evenings…even though it was a brutal week getting used to that time change. Here are some ways to make the most of springtime with your family PLUS a great deal for MBM readers to help celebrate the minted 9 year Anniversary!

  1. Backyard BBQ’s

Spend less time in the kitchen and take the cooking out back! One of the things I love about grilling is that I can hand off dinner to my husband and let him handle the main course! Whether it be as simple as hot dog and hamburgers, or gourmet salmon with grilled veggies, the options are endless. Keep the kids entertained with easy backyard games like cornhole or kickball.

  1. Sundowners at the Beach

The beach isn’t just for mornings or afternoons. Head over there with your family before sunset for a “Sundowner”. The kids can run around and play in the ocean or sand, while mom and dad enjoy some time together outdoors. Invite other families and pack some Naked Wines and cheese to make an event out of it!

  1. Picnic at the Playground

Pack up your dinner and take it to the park! Choose foods that are easy to set out and fuss free to eat such as pasta salad or sandwiches. Your kids will love the extra play time, and you’ll love tiring them out before bed!

A graduate from the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management, she has always had a passion for hospitality and entertaining. Leigh is currently a Special Events Designer for Boca By Design at the Boca Raton Resort & Club which she loves because it allows her to use her creativity to bring her clients’ visions to life.

Juggling a career and a family can be difficult, but she tries to make time for other things that are important to her such as running (some) mornings at 5am with the Boca/Deerfield Chapter of MRRT (Moms RUN this Town) and planning the social events for her sorority’s local alumni chapter. Leigh is especially excited for all the new events she will get to host for her family and friends now that she is a mom and the memories they will all have to cherish thereafter!

Ready for the Best Time Ever?! KIDZ BOP Coming to Miami Beach 8/17

Are you ready for the best time ever? Then get ready for the best news ever: KIDZ BOP COMING TO MIAMI BEACH

Yes, the “#1 Kids’ Artist” in the U.S.A. is coming to the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater for KIDZ BOP Live on August 6th (2017)!

This multi-talented group of kids sing and dance to today’s most popular music hits! They also take current pop songs and make them kid-friendly and parent-approved.

KIDZ BOP coming to Miami Beach

And our friend Kimberly at Growing Up Glad blog has the concert details!

For my family, it was the first pop music my girls listened to when we graduated from Nursery Rhymes and The Wiggles.

They slightly alter the music to eliminate any questionable words or innuendos. Kidz Bop also has their own SiriusXM station-KIDZ BOP Radio on channel 77 and it is always on in our car. Sometimes I realize the station is still playing even when I’m alone!

Along with their radio station, they have music videos, a YouTube channel and best-selling compilation CDs featuring today’s biggest hits “sung by kids, for kids.” Their videos are filmed at fun locations and the kids wear colorful, age-appropriate clothes as they sing and dance. My girls are mesmerized when they watch their videos.

BREAKING: KIDZ BOP Coming to Miami Beach

The Kidz Bop Kidz also tour live in concert and we’re so excited they’re coming to the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater.

It was also my older daughter’s first ever concert. This one coming up will be my younger daughter’s first concert experience. It was a great show that opened up with talented local children on stage. They were from different dance schools and performed/warmed up the crowd before the show. Then the Kidz Bop kidz came on and danced and sang to the most current pop hits!

I felt the concert was timed appropriately to keep the attention of the young audience.

So, if you’re ready to have the BEST TIME EVER, it’s time to get your tickets to the new Kidz Bop concert coming to Miami Beach! I know we’ll be there!

Tickets can be purchased HERE.

You can also enter our giveaway below for your chance to WIN 4 Tickets to the August 6th show at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater!

Jingle All The Way To Brio Tuscan Grille for their New Menu

Over the holidays, I had the pleasure of dining at Brio Tuscan Grille and experiencing their holiday promotion.

Being someone who considers herself quite the foodie, I was excited to experience and enjoy this restaurant. Italian food is one of my favorites and I hadn’t yet had the pleasure of trying Brio Tuscan Grille cuisine!

Brio Tuscan Grille Dining Experience

When I walked in after being greeted by the kind valet, I was swept into a charming atmosphere. With dim lighting and soft sounds of conversation, I was more than impressed.

Led quickly to a cloth draped table framed with small plates, I was greeted by a wonderful server. He was hands-down one of the best servers I have ever had in my extensive dining experiences. He was incredibly attentive, very kind and met and exceeded our needs and expectations. The manager also came over several times to make sure we were enjoying our dine to the fullest. It was such a welcoming environment!

New Menu Features

We first ordered the Roasted Garlic, Spinach and Artichoke dip and it was DIVINE. Creamy, smooth and paired with the perfect crunchy chips it seriously rivaled any other appetizer I have ever gotten. The only real downfall is that I had to share!

I also ordered the Pasta Pesto and I am very picky with my pasta, so I was wary. But when it was delivered, I was pleasantly surprised. The chicken was perfectly cooked with explosive flavor and was paired flawlessly with a deliciously light pesto sauce.

My dining companion had the Grilled Salmon Salad and couldn’t rave enough about how light and succulent the salmon was. Even though I don’t love seafood or shellfish, I still tried it and it was mouth watering!

Finishing the night with a creamy and divine latte, I was content.

Following this exquisite meal, I can confidently say that this #foodie who loves everything from crabs by the ocean to burgers at a stand loved and will return to the impeccable cuisine and service at Brio Tuscan Grille.

xoxo,
Shelby

Stocking Stuffers Your Boca Raton Teenager Needs

Gifts for teenagers are notoriously difficult to nail down. And I don’t even have one (yet, I still know this). They have to be on-trend and relevant and unique. And since teenager’s interests are often ever-changing, there’s a small window to find whatever “it-thing” is at the top of their list.  However, no matter how picky your teenager, these stocking stuffers are sure to win over a few hearts this Christmas season.

Luminescent Nightlights

They may think they’re “too old” for a nightlight, but this Balloon Dog nightlight is too sweet to be outgrown. With a pop-art inspired aesthetic, this nostalgic piece of decor is a trendy addition to a teen room, and with just the squeeze of its hindpaw, emits 30 minutes of ambient glow. So, even if an actual dog is off the table for this year’s wish list, this guy will provide some soothing, loyal nighttime company.

Although, if an easy-to-maintain pet is on the table, then you may want to consider the Bioluminescent Dino Pet, which serves as both a nightlight and living companionship… of sorts. Boasting as “thousands of pets in one,” the Dino Pet is a beautiful, glass, dinosaur-shaped container holding countless bioluminescent plankton called dinoflagellates, or “dinos.” Just keep in indirect sunlight during the day and gently shake to spur a gentle, blue glow.

Typo: Novelty Hot Dog Pen

Make homework just a little bit more fun with a novelty pen by Typo. They make one in just about every major teen food group: hot dogs, tacos, donuts, pizza, ice cream. Typo’s unique take on the classic, black ball-point just adds a twist of personality to this year’s stocking staples. Pair it with a Marvel Spinout Notebook for an added, note-taking punch.

Bluetooth Speakers

Anything music-related is usually pretty much a safe bet when it comes to checking off gifts for teenagers, although, it seems earbuds and headphones are the fallback. Shake it up a bit this year. JBL has a variety of Bluetooth speakers, and all of them are pretty on-point for the teen who likes to take their time primping in the bathroom, spend all summer poolside or beach-bound.

A Cozy Christmas Morning

No matter your age, a good pair of slippers are a holiday staple. ThinkGeek’s dragon slippers come complete with foil horns, sweet, grins, little wings and LED-powered cheeks that light the way with each step, which, if we took a guess, is most likely headed in search of a midnight snack. Of course, if you have more of the unicorn type on your hand, ThinkGeek offers this species of mythical creature as well. These guys, complete with a golden horn and rainbow LED cheeks are equally capable of keeping your teen’s feet, and heart, warm all winter long. Add in some more plushy goodness with Tipsy Elves’ hilarious but comfortable Christmas pajamas.

F in Exams by Richard Benson

High school is tough, but F in Exams by Richard Benson is a light-hearted take on the struggles of student life. Benson “celebrates the creative side of failure” by collecting some of the trickiest test questions and the very best wrong answers from students around the country. Whether your kid breezes through school or needs extra motivation, this is the perfect gift for those who appreciate the humor in test-taking.

Letters To My Future Self by Lea Redmond

While stocking stuffers can lean towards the silly side, Letters to My Future Self is one they can appreciate for years to come. Containing 12, fold-and-mail type letters, each asks the writer to self-reflect on a variety of topics and question prompts such as, “What do you love right now?” “Where do you want to go tomorrow?” and “What do you never want to forget?” These mini time capsules can then be sealed, and postdated, capturing a thoughtful moment in the time. While this makes a great gift for this holiday season, once completed these letters can be saved a re-gifted for a special milestone in the future, such as a graduation, big birthday or a wedding.

Make sure your teenager smiles with delight come Christmas morning with these fantastic stocking stuffer ideas!

How to Design the Perfect Nursery for Your Boca Baby with Style Tips from Get Decorated

The last thing that a MBMom-to-be should have to worry about is how to design the perfect nursery for her Boca baby. Furniture, color, accessories – the list seems never ending! That’s why we sat down with interior design expert Lindsay Biondo, founder of Get Decorated.

While providing traditional interior designer services, Get Decorated’s unique business feature is that they also specialize in online home decor services. Moving the design process online is especially helpful for busy families and moms-to-be, who don’t have a lot of extra time. Lindsay shared with us some of her favorite tips on how to design the perfect nursery.

How to Design the Perfect Nursery for Your Boca Baby

How to Design the Perfect Nursery for Your Boca Baby

Transitional Pieces: Invest in furniture pieces that you will be able to use as the child grows. For example, use a dresser that includes a removable changing top. That way, when you no longer need it for changing, you can just swap it off and be left with a normal dresser; and if you have another baby shortly after, you won’t need to worry about buying a new changing table!

Buy Smart: Oftentimes, parents will gravitate towards classic toy items for their baby room. A beautiful, expensive toy trunk may seem like a good investment at first, but you might find that it’s harder to integrate the style into the room in the future. Rather than splurging on something that your child may potentially outgrow, check out some alternative options from places like IKEA.

I love to source IKEA for these kind of items – they have such great options in a variety of colors!

How to Design the Perfect Nursery for Your Boca Baby

Color: Try to work with a gender neutral color palette. Rather than going for an all pink girl’s room, use a combination of teal and blue and white. You can always add a more feminine accent, like the chandelier we used in the picture above. Also, if you use a color palette that is more sophisticated, it will create way more opportunities to shop for products. You don’t need to limit yourself to strictly baby stores – bring in some design that also makes you feel comfortable. You will be spending a lot of time in the nursery too!

Just remember – you should have fun designing the perfect nursery for YOUR FAMILY! Make sure you choose pieces that are both comfortable and beautiful. Using these tips, you will create a room for your baby that is functional, stylish and trendy. Perfect for the Modern Boca Mom. 🙂

Student Empowerment: 7 Ways to Empower Young Minds

The task to empower young minds is certainly not an easy one. It can have its challenges, especially in regards to academic success. Many find academics to be challenging in their own right, leaving the task of student empowerment slightly more difficult as well.

Despite the challenges involved, there are a few ways to empower young minds effectively. Young minds are indeed the future, and with positive support, you can make a big impact in your student’s future. Let’s put on those brainstorming caps and look at 7 ways to empower young minds.

Student Empowerment

  1. Empower Young Minds by Encouraging Soul Searching

This may seem a bit whimsical in nature, however, in order to empower young minds, students need to have their heart into it. Forcing a student to achieve is like herding cats, unless you find out what it is they truly want in life.

Student empowerment involves asking him or her what they want to achieve. Discuss strengths and weaknesses, and begin developing a list of resources and support channels to ensure success.

  1. Set Attainable Goals and Keep Students Motivated

By setting attainable goals your student will stay motivated to continue achieving. Long-term goals are fantastic, however, short-term goals that offer weekly and monthly success are just as important.

  1. Put Talent and Passion to Work for Student Empowerment

Have you ever done a job you simply weren’t interested in? Many have, and it certainly doesn’t feel too empowering. By employing the talents and passion of your student, you are setting them up for success.

On the other hand, if your student’s dream is to become an astronaut, but their science and math is slightly below average, don’t let them give up. Hard work is often an attribute of the most successful in the world.

  1. Empower Young Minds Using Determination

The hard work and determination a student puts toward their education will become a lifelong trait.

Explain to your student how difficult things may get, but they are never alone. Show them how they can easily access resources and find support to achieve. Student empowerment comes with a lot of communication. Keep those discussion channels open.

Student Empowerment

  1. Let Your Student Know that Success and Achieving Goals is Not Always Possible

This could be seen as counterintuitive, but it is in fact a very important life lesson for students. In order to empower young minds, you have to be honest. There will be times when a student will struggle to meet expectations.

Tell your student it is not failing that people will see, but it how you handle those failures. Struggle is inevitable, and in order to empower young minds, you need to teach them how to get back on the horse.

  1. Use Social Media to Your Advantage

Social media is often seen as an enemy when it comes to empowering young minds and having them succeed academically. However, social media can be a powerful ally in your efforts to connect with your students.

You can develop a social media presence that lets students share achievements and post goals. Students can also use the social media platform to encourage and offer support to peers.

  1. Empower Young Minds Through Enthusiasm

You can’t simply tell a student to do a good job and simply hope for the best. You need to be as enthusiastic as you want them to be. This will not only show them you care, but it will also empower them to take matters into their own hands.

It can be easy for you to get negative if your student is simply not performing at the level you know he or she can. However, it is vital to stay upbeat and keep the atmosphere positive. Offer more resources that will allow your student to achieve, and keep the experience fun!

The Boca Raton Parent’s Guide to Pokemon GO

As parents, we are always facing new dilemmas when it comes to raising our families. Sometimes it’s online video challenges or what time a child should go to bed. We are the ones who have to decide what is best for our sons and daughters. Sometimes these situations are easy. We wouldn’t normally allow a six year old to stay up past midnight or eat an entire gallon of rocky road ice cream. However, occasionally we encounter a scenario that deserves closer inspection. We need to weigh the pros and cons carefully to keep our children’s well being our uppermost priority. After all, it’s the loving thing to do. Currently, many parents are facing the decision to let our boys and girls play Pokémon GO.

Pokémon Go

In the beginning, Pokémon GO looks just like any other downloadable game. It has nice graphics and mesmerizes our kids. However, this app requires players to walk around outside, roaming neighborhoods looking for elusive Pokémon, Poké stops, and gyms. Suddenly, our children are being physically active without us begging them to get moving.

Besides melting away calories, all of this mobility is leading to unique social benefits. As players become involved in this augmented reality app, they are unifying and building a sense of community with others. Now, we are reading stories about how Pokémon GO has improved the mental lives of people. People who are suffering from depression, PTSD, anxiety, and special needs like autism.

Pokémon Go

While more exercise and camaraderie is undoubtedly a good thing, communities are noticing a startling spike in accidents and dangerous situations as more and more people “gotta catch’em all”.

The distractive nature of this wildly popular app, which has been downloaded over 21 million times, has led to many vehicle accidents, trips, falls, and injuries. And to add further insult to injury, now authorities are cautioning users to be aware. Pedophiles and criminals are beginning to use this app to lure in potential victims.

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party Theme

We all know that in our fair city of Boca, there’s no shortage of creative birthday party venues or ideas. That’s why when my friend Claudia threw her 3 year-old a Boca Raton tennis birthday party, I had to have her write about it for us…

Enjoy!

Each year, I seek out a unique birthday party theme that will encourage/support whatever sport/activity my daughter is currently into. Coming from an architecture/interior design pre-mommy career, I really enjoy creating one-of-a-kind themes and designs. This year, my “Boca Raton tennis birthday party” idea came about naturally.

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party 03

My daughter developed a big interest in tennis (from the age of 2) after watching tennis competition videos of her older cousins from Peru, who compete  around the world. I started researching and found out that Patch Reef Tennis Center was the only academy in Boca  that will teach a toddler as young as 3.

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party 02

She started taking tennis classes in February of this year and absolutely loved it from the very first lesson! Lucky for me, Patch Reef offers a 2 hour tennis birthday party package which includes:

  • 1.5 hours with 3 tennis pros/teachers
  • Half hour food/cake cutting in their air conditioned party room

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party 06

I decided to have all of the food and cake right on the courts so everyone stayed engaged and guests had the option to snack and drink at their leisure. Patch Reef provided a nice canopied area with tables/chairs for adults and 3 kids’ picnic tables, so all I had to bring was decorations, food and drinks!

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party 10

The colors for the party were a combination of pink and lime green. The invitations featured adorable pink tennis balls.

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party 01

Believe it or not, the food was from Costco and my daughter’s fondant cake with dulce de leche filling  was from Whole Foods.

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party 07

All 20+ kids were eager to play tennis and had a ton of fun! For most of the kids, it was their first introduction to tennis and they were very engaged.

Boca Raton Tennis Birthday Party 05

I am thrilled that our Boca Raton tennis birthday party ended up as a successful theme to celebrate my daughter’s 3rd birthday!
