MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.
Welcome to our latest installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow mommas!
Today’s featured Modern Boca MOMpreneurs are Carmela Jones and Maggie Weeks, co-owners of Pocket Pediatrics, online developmental therapy services.
Tell us a little about your backgrounds and why you decided to start Pocket Pediatrics online developmental therapy services…
Hi! My name is Carmela Jones. I am a certified educator, pediatric nurse practitioner, developmental specialist, pediatric mental health specialist, and a mom to two amazing girls! I have been helping children and families with their learning needs since 2007. Being a mom has helped me realize how important it is to get your child help early on.
“With my own girls, I was able to see how much growth and development occurs in the first few years and how critical early learning experiences can be in that time.”
I’m Maggie Weeks and I’m also a family nurse practitioner and developmental specialist, and I created Pocket Pediatrics because we noticed a need for convenient, online developmental therapy services for busy families in the community.
We offer virtual developmental services such as speech, behavior, movement and social skill interventions to children. These online developmental therapy services are self-pay so no insurance approval is needed. Unlike other developmental therapy groups, we see children ages 0 up to age 18 with or without disabilities. Sometimes kids just need a little extra help and Carmela and I have joined forces to create Pocket Pediatrics for all families!
What challenges did you face early on with your business?
Maggie: There were many challenges along the way and Carmela and I have worked together with our backgrounds and experience to make the best all encompassing program we can that can also be customized for each child no matter what the needs are. All children are different and we wanted to make sure we could provide these particular services to a large age range of children and young adults.
What’s unique about your online developmental therapy services program?
What’s unique about our program is that our clients don’t need to meet any specific criteria to qualify. We teach families how to help their children so that progress can continue to be made outside of sessions. Our goal is to help children and their families to become confident and independent in their abilities so that they can grow to be their best selves.
Even though your business is online, what do you love about working and living in South Florida?
Carmela: Florida is one of the most beautiful and sought after destinations in the world. We love it here! We are so glad to be in an area that we can really make a difference and help families become the best that they can be by also giving them the tools they can use at home.
Maggie: We love that through our virtual platform, we are able to work with children all around the South Florida area. We are a women-owned business and are excited that we are beginning to expand and continue our work with children and their families.
