If you’re looking for a unique Florida family getaway that blends luxury, world class equestrian events, and plenty of fun activities for all ages, it’s time to hit the road to the horse capital of the world: Ocala! The World Equestrian Center (WEC) is a dream destination—imagine “Disney World for horse lovers”, with all the perks of fine dining, spa treatments, shopping, and Olympic-level competitions. A four-hour drive from Boca Raton, this World Equestrian Center road trip should be on your family’s must-visit list!
How to Get to Ocala on Your World Equestrian Center Road Trip
Getting to WEC in Ocala from Boca Raton is a pretty easy World Equestrian Center road trip—just hop on I-95 North or Florida’s Turnpike and head toward Orlando, then take Florida’s Turnpike North to I-75 North. Continue on I-75 North to Exit 354 (US-27) in Ocala, then follow signs for WEC Ocala (about 10 miles west). The drive takes approximately 4 to 4.5 hours, depending on traffic.
A Luxury Equestrian Retreat
When we first arrived at WEC, we were blown away by the sheer size of this 378-acre equestrian paradise. From grand prix show jumping to high-end boutiques and incredible restaurants, WEC offers an experience unlike any other in Florida. Opened to the public in late 2020, it’s already made a major impression—Time Magazine even named it one of the World’s Greatest Places in 2024!
Whether you’re an equestrian enthusiast or just along for the adventure, there’s something here for everyone on this World Equestrian Center road trip.
Where to Stay
WEC currently offers two fantastic hotel options, each with its own unique vibe:
- The Riding Academy Hotel – A family-friendly and pet-friendly option with stylish rooms, a pool + splash pad, and easy access to all the action. Perfect for families looking for a comfortable stay with a relaxed atmosphere.
- The Equestrian Hotel – This is WEC’s luxury hotel, featuring elegant rooms, high-end retailers, and incredible dining. The hotel’s expansive terrace overlooks the main arena, offering the perfect spot for seasonal food and wine events—or, in our case, a front-row seat to watch equestrian jumpers from all over the world compete for a huge cash prize. We sipped champagne (and for the kids, hot chocolate) and enjoyed an arena-side charcuterie board at their exclusive Grand Prix Reception Experience. This is officially my new favorite kind of sporting event!
We stayed at The Riding Academy Hotel and loved the cozy-yet-chic Ralph Lauren-inspired design. It’s ideal for families, and the kids will love the pool after a day of exploring!
Dining at WEC: A Foodie’s Dream
One of the biggest surprises of our World Equestrian Center road trip? The incredible food scene at WEC. With a variety of restaurants offering everything from fine dining to casual eats, there’s something for everyone (even the picky eaters in your family!).
Must-Try Restaurants:
- Stirrups – An elegant spot with gourmet dishes and an unbeatable view of the main arena.
- The Yellow Pony Pub & Garden – A fun gastropub with great food, craft cocktails, and a lively atmosphere.
- Emma’s Patisserie – A French-inspired bakery with over-the-top pastries and coffee.
- Filo’s Mexican Cantina – Authentic Mexican street food with a festive vibe (and an epic Saturday night after-party!).
- Miss Tilly’s Lollipops – The cutest sweet shop with handmade fudge, ice cream, and coffee.
- Ralph’s Burger & Sandwich Shop – A diner-style spot offering classic burgers, milkshakes, and sandwiches.
- Viola & Dot’s Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria – A casual Italian eatery where you can customize your own pizza.
Whether you’re in the mood for a gourmet meal or a quick bite between world class riding events, WEC’s dining options are next-level!

Things to Do Beyond the Horses
Even if your family isn’t horse-obsessed, there’s plenty to do at WEC!
- Relax at the Pool & Splash Pad – Both hotels offer resort-style pools that are perfect for unwinding.
- Shop ‘Til You Drop – The boutiques at WEC sell everything from high-end equestrian fashion to adorable home decor and gifts. Mr. Pickles & Sailor Bear Toy Shoppe was a hit with my daughter!
- Get Pampered at Calluna Spa – My husband and I booked a Stretch & Sip class, and it was heavenly. Next time, I’m adding a couples massage!

- Enjoy the Grand Prix Block Party – Every Saturday night, WEC hosts a family-friendly festival with food trucks, live music, face painting, and world class show jumping. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience!
- Golf Cart Adventures – Trust me, WEC is HUGE! Renting a golf cart is not only convenient but also super fun for kids.
Is WEC Worth the Road Trip?
