A Step Back in Time

Bonnet House in Fort Lauderdale is more than just a museum; it’s a journey through history. Built in 1920, this 35-acre subtropical estate located at the intracoastal waterway was once the winter retreat of Chicago artist Frederic Clay Bartlett and his wife Evelyn Fortune Lilly. Today, it’s an example of historic preservation, a Fort Lauderdale Beach oceanfront time capsule that offers visitors a glimpse into a bygone era.

Families will love exploring the main house itself, which is filled with colorful artwork, antique furnishings, and quirky architectural details (the monkeys!) that reflect the Bartletts’ creative spirits. The guided and self-guided tours are engaging and informative, offering fun facts and stories that will keep kids and adults alike entertained.

Nature’s Playground

Outside, the extensive grounds and gardens are a true masterpiece. It’s no wonder so many weddings are held here! You can stroll through a lush landscape filled with tropical plants, orchids, and even a butterfly garden.

Wildlife enthusiasts might spot swans, monkeys, or the occasional manatee (like we did!) in the nearby waterways. The outdoor spaces at Bonnet House provide the perfect opportunity to teach kids about Florida’s unique ecosystem.

MBMOM Tip: There’s a café on-site with snacks and sandwiches…and champagne that you can drink as you stroll the grounds! Yum!

Forest Forms: A Must-See Exhibit through April 27, 2025

One of the biggest reasons to visit Bonnet House right now is their Forest Forms Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit, running through April 27, 2025. This stunning collection by world-renowned artist Huelani Mei features 18 larger-than-life metal sculptures that explore the lines, rhythm, and movement of nature. And, we saw them all!

From a majestic fox family to a towering peacock and an intricate archway shaped like a snake, these sculptures bring the natural world to life in a truly captivating way. Made from powder-coated steel and designed in a unique “line work” style, each piece invites viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the beauty of the Florida outdoors.
