MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.
Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.
Today’s featured Modern Boca MOMpreneur is...Dr. Marianna Blyumin-Karasik, the dermatologist and co-founder behind the NEW Precision Skin Institute here in South Florida!
Tell us a little bit about your background, mommyhood and what drove you to start your businesses…
When I was a teenager, my family and I immigrated to the United States from Estonia, and I spent the latter part of my childhood growing up in Maryland. I met my husband in middle school, but we didn’t get married until I was done with my medical training. While I was completing my college and medical education in Washington, D.C., I had a clear view of my future life: I would finish my medical training, get married, have kids and balance my family life with practicing medicine in the Northeast.
However, it seems that life had a few twists and turns in store for me…
What happened next?
My Dermatology residency at the University of Miami brought me to South Florida, where I fell in love with the warm climate, the culture, and the people. It didn’t take long for my husband and I to become true Floridians. After finishing my Dermatology residency, I felt torn. On the one hand, I wanted to start my own dermatology clinic. On the other hand, I was not getting any younger, and I needed to focus on starting a family. Having a family with many kids was always my dream, so I placed my entrepreneurial venture on the backburner.
My oldest daughter, Lili, was born 5 years ago, and from the moment my husband and I saw her, she became the center of our existence, inspiring awe with every smile and giggle. After Lili, we wanted to have more wonderful children, but we had a significant challenge getting pregnant again. I often thought about my vision to start a practice, but I was afraid I would not be able to juggle the kind of demanding schedule it would involve, while simultaneously raising young children.
“My family was always one of my main priorities, so, once again, I had to delay my career-related goals and dreams.”
Unfortunately, a significant and very sad event occurred in my life in the summer of 2014, which opened my eyes to reality: I cannot plan my life perfectly, and I have to move forward with my dreams. In April 2015, I decided to open my dermatology practice, with a wonderful partner, Dr. Lesley Clark-Loeser. And in May 2015, I found out I was pregnant with TWINS. Fate really has no rhyme or reason!
My twins, Emma and Edward, are three months old and a week ago, I opened my new dermatology practice, Precision Skin Institute, in Davie, Florida. My life feels like a roller-coaster ride right now, but I’m still very grateful and fulfilled.
What challenges did you face in opening your new practice?
My business grew out of a determination to create a unique dermatology practice committed to delivering comprehensive, compassionate, and cutting-edge skincare. It was challenging to find an ideal location and build it according to my aesthetic vision. After moving to Davie three years ago, I noted that there was a need for a quality and patient-focused dermatologist in the community; I am glad to fill that niche now. After nine months of intricate design and planning, our office build-out was complete. Precision Skin Institute has a beautiful and serene ambiance that my patients enjoy!
What is unique about Precision Skin Institute?
At Precision Skin Institute, we make everyone who visits our office feel welcome and cared for as an individual, and we treat them with the utmost respect. I pride myself in taking time, listening to my patients, educating them about their skin conditions, and providing them with the best skin care. As an institute, our dermatology clinic is centered around an educational experience to enhance compliance with treatment and beauty regimens to achieve healthy results.
Why do you think MBMom readers should become your patients?
I am privileged to provide patients with medical, cosmetic and surgical dermatology care. I especially love to take care of the whole family. For instance, I frequently see kids with eczema, teenagers with acne, moms for cosmetic procedures, dads for mole checks and grandparents for skin cancer screenings. Our office is also very technologically advanced, with electronic medical records, state-of-the art laser, light, and energy-based devices. My patients find my extensive training and experience, as well as my commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based dermatology care, both reassuring and appealing.
What exciting things are coming up for your new practice?
We have several fantastic promotions coming up at Precision Skin Institute in March. First, our new patients can take advantage of complimentary cosmetic consultations. We are also offering a neurotoxin/filler special on March 24th in honor of Women’s History Month. Also, our medical aesthetician, Lina Lopez, is offering promotional peels and facial treatments in March and April (2016).
What do you love about living and working in South Florida?
I love living and working in South Florida because of the warm climate, proximity to tranquil ocean waves, and the variety of outdoor activities I can enjoy with my family and friends. I also feel that living close to east coast cities, such as Boca, Fort Lauderdale and Miami is both culturally and socially stimulating. As “foodies,” my husband and I also enjoy many fusion restaurants in the area!
