iFly With My Family | NEW Indoor Skydiving in Ft. Lauderdale

So…I took my 3 year-old SKYDIVING. Indoor skydiving in Fort Lauderdale that is, at the brand new iFLY!

indoor skydiving in Fort Lauderdale iFLY

Judge me if you will (try not to though), but it was one of the most amazing family activities we’ve ever done together! Indoor skydiving was exhilarating, totally unique…and you pretty much look ridiculous doing it together. As a parent, I call  that #WINNING whether you have a toddler or a teenager!

Indoor Skydiving in Fort Lauderdale: iFLY

iFLY, the world’s largest indoor skydiving operation, is now delivering the dream of flight to adventure seekers age 3 to 103 in South Florida. With iFLY, people of all ages and abilities can experience human flight in a safe, comfortable and fun environment without having to jump out of an airplane.

PTL because I ain’t doing THAT. Nor am I letting any close family members do THAT.

Sporting my LL Scene Swag. I am a smart blonde! 🙂

iFLY is a marvel of engineering that replicates the sensation of freefall, creating conditions that allow you to fly on a smooth cushion of air.

In layman’s terms: you hover over a giant fan in a big, glass tube.

indoor skydiving in Fort Lauderdale iFLY
Yep, that’s me!
How does it work?

To prepare for your flight experience, you’ll complete a short training class guided by one of iFLY’s flight and safety instructors. Then, you’ll suit up in your flight gear, including goggles, helmet and flight suit, and enter the flight chamber.

indoor skydiving in Fort Lauderdale iFLY

MBMOM TIP: Mommas, put your/your child’s hair in a low bun or braid if you can. I can’t tell you how many intense tangles I had in my (short) hair post-flight! I also recommend going for the full face helmet as it helps restrict the airflow around your head. This momma drooled like crazy, LOL! Real cute.

With the help of iFLY certified flight instructors, you’ll actually learn to fly and control your body in the air. And it is tricky! Check out these videos:

We each flew 2x for one minute each time. The first flight…you’re pretty much getting your bearings. It’s shockingly a lot of core work and frankly just feels weird. The second time, you can add a “high flying upgrade” to your family flight package and really soar! I definitely recommend it as you’ll feel more comfortable the second time around AND have a lot more fun knowing what to expect.

MBMOM TIP: After donning all the flightgear, my daughter started to get a little nervous. I told her she only had to try it once and she totally did it…but only once. Make sure you get all of your photos/video on the first try in case your kiddo chickens out of round 2. iFLY also takes amazing professional photos and videos that you can purchase for a small fee at the checkout kiosks post-flight.

MOMpreneur Monday: Moms Pump Here App

MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.

Happy Monday Modern Boca Moms! Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.

MBM_MomprenuerMondays_500

Today’s featured MOMpreneur is…Priya Nembhard, co-founder of the Moms Pump Here app.

Moms Pump Here App Modern Boca Mom Featured

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you launched the Moms Pump Here app

I’m a serial entrepreneur who still believes I can change the world. Being a mom is probably one of the biggest reasons why I pursued entrepreneurship.

I want to leave a legacy for my children and be a role model for them, so they believe in their hearts that they too can change the world.

So my sons know what a strong, positive woman looks like and so my daughter has a template she can look up to. Although entrepreneurship is very much about taking risk, the biggest risk would be not risking it for them. Being an entrepreneur also means flexibility– to be present in their lives, to do homework, take them for mommy dates and be there for them when they need me.

PriyaNembhard-children

In addition to Moms Pump Here, I also co-founded a non-profit in Miami, The EDGE Charitable Foundation, because I wanted the world to be a better place for my children (all children).

What challenges did you face when starting your business?

My business partner, Kim Harrison, and I are both moms of 3. We both breastfed and breast pumped for our children.

Kim contacted me one day complaining about the horrible experience she had looking for a place to pump at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan, while attending a conference (I was living in Miami at the time). She had to resort to using a bathroom stall. We both thought that no mom should have to go through that.

No one would even think of eating in a bathroom, so why should moms have to nurse their children or prepare their food in one? So, we committed to finding a solution for moms like us and Moms Pump Here was born!

Screenshot_2015-03-27-15-38-52

(Note: Kim has gone back every year since 2012, when we were founded, to the Javits Center and little by little, it has gotten better. Most recently they had a small dedicated space, not a 5 star arrangement, but someplace a mom could nurse or pump.)

What is unique about your app and why should MBMom readers download it ASAP?

We are the first online GPS resources for moms to find, rate and share places to breastfeed and breast pump. Created by moms for moms, Moms Pump Here app, provides moms with choices.

It’s a woman’s natural and federal right to breastfeed in public and private places anywhere she is allowed to be. With Moms Pump Here app, a mom can breastfeed in public or look for one of our locations. Additionally, she can also breast pump in private. All locations have a short review about what is available at each location or if nothing is available.

Screenshot_2015-03-27-15-49-10

Using GPS, moms can search nursing room locations within a 200 mile radius of where they stand or in areas they may be traveling too. The locations include retail stores, sports complexes, airports, hospitals, universities and more.

In addition, they can also add a nursing room location via the app by submitting an image, details and contact information for the location. All new or submitted locations are vetted by our team through, research, calls and mom forums.

What exciting things are coming up for you and your business?

We are rolling out international locations such as Canada and Australia this fall. We will also be at the Expecting Parent and Baby Expo in New York in October and will be updating the App with new mommy friendly features in the near future.

What did you love most about living in South Florida?

I loved the weather, people and laid back lifestyle. Grateful for the experiences and the people I had the pleasure of working with. We lived in Miami for 8 years and moved to New York City following the death of my father to care for my mother. We anticipate moving back to Miami in a few years. My three children miss it tremendously and ask frequently when we are coming back.

PriyaNembhard-children-BlackPointMarina

Our earliest press came from South Florida (Miami Herald and Miami Community Newspaper)! And, I frequently travel back for my foundation.

Dear Cender Scholars, I’m a Mom. I’m Way Too Busy to Read.

Sponsored

“I’m a mom. I’m too busy to read.”

Deep down, is that really true? I mean, you’re reading this blog right now, aren’t you?

I love to read, but I’ve found myself saying those words a lot lately (replace busy with TIRED or OVERWHELMED and I begin to sound like a broken record). So, what kind of message are we sending to our kiddos with that statement?

Portrait of a family reading a book in a bedroom

Did you know students (depending on age) are expected to read for 20-30 minutes or more daily inside of class as well as additional time at home to improve their skills? My friends at Cender Scholars also tell me that teachers are being given 90 minute mandatory reading blocks in class.

It’s becoming more and more apparent how crucial it is for children to ‘read like the wind.’ I’m talking about truly reading (not social media “skimming”). My teacher friends tell me that the students who devour books in their class are always, without fail, the strongest students in every subject area.

It’s no surprise then: Being a successful reader creates a successful student who can conquer any feat in the classroom.

Portrait of pupils looking at page of encyclopaedia at reading lesson

So what happens if you don’t have a strong reader? And why should you care, even at a young age?

Here’s the deal: “Students who struggle with reading comprehension will struggle with math word problems, science formulas and any content-based vocabulary will become an uphill battle if a student’s comprehension is lacking,” says Erica Cender of Cender Scholars. “In addition to setting aside extra time to read with your child, I recommend looking into outsourcing extra help with a reading tutor.”

reading_statistics

A reading tutor from a company like Cender Scholars will:
  1. Ensure that a child isn’t just sitting in their room staring at a book and struggling through reading time.
  2. Help build strategies for reading comprehension even for fluent readers.

The “fluent reader” is tricky. You may see your child flying through books and afterwards he/she may think they are a strong reader, but they end up having zero recollection of what they read or the content just zips over their head.

Students must be encouraged to slow down, attack tricky vocabulary and stop throughout their reading to take it all in and build meaning from the words.

“Having a one-on-one reading coach is fundamental to a student’s ultimate success in school. Fluent readers can slip right through the cracks because they may be reading beautifully, but are completely lost when it comes to comprehension,” explained Cender.

So set your child up for scholarly success!

Cender Scholars has easy-to-book Reading Coaches available to Boca moms and beyond with a touch of a button, and they will come to YOU. You can book right online via your phone or computer. It’s that easy!

Mommy Facebook Recos Aren’t Always the Best. Here’s Why…says Cender Scholars

If you’re a local mom with a Facebook account, chances are you’re a member of one or more Facebook “groups.” I belong to several…at least 10+, some of which where I’ve learned to turn the notifications OFF. (I’m looking at you Mamarama)

Lately (and especially with the new school year starting), I’ve seen a lot of requests for tutors– all kinds! Math, foreign language, piano, sports, you name it! And some of the suggestions have been questionable.

My neighbor, this friend, my retired grandfather…

I don’t know why you would chance the success of your child and not be 100% sure you’re hiring a qualified tutor.

In talking with local entrepreneur and founder of Cender Scholars, Erica Cender, “it is imperative that your child clicks with his or her tutor. Finding a tutor that makes kids feel safe, nurtured, encouraged and empowered is what you should look for in a tutoring company.”

Tree with Cender Scholars Logo

And finding one at the BEGINNING of the school year can often be way more effective than waiting until you see your child struggling with a particular subject. It is a wonderful thing to build a rapport with your tutor and a strong bond while the year is fresh. And tutors can plan lessons and sessions to coincide with what students are learning in class. That’s a win/win for everyone!

Here are some tools you might find useful in finding the perfect match, dubbed the 4 R’s:
  • Real – lessons are authentic, concrete, and understandable.
  • Relevant – lessons relate to the students’ life experiences and are relatable.
  • Rigorous – lessons tackle the problem areas the student is having difficulty with and helping them not view them as hurdles.
  • Relationships – tutors develop a trusting work environment that encourages the student to succeed.

You want your child(ren) to build confidence for the school year ahead, so choosing your tutor sooner rather than later is key. One of my favorite parts about Cender Scholars is that you CAN BOOK EVERYTHING DIRECTLY ONLINE STRAIGHT FROM YOUR PHONE.

And their tutors will COME TO YOU. Sorry for all the caps, but these mommy conveniences are worth shouting out online!

5 Home Space Lifts (That You’ll Get Back at Closing!)

From Modern Boca Real Estate Mom…

 photo 5 1_zpsbw9dg5ex.png

Nowadays, it’s not keeping up with the Joneses, it’s keeping up with Pinterest, HGTV, Houzz…seriously, just trying to list the outlets available to make you feel inadequate about your house is exhausting.

As you might guess, I love to decorate. I am a design junkie, but most of the time, I need to reign myself in. Literally. I have a little mini Realtor on one shoulder and a designer on the other, because, frankly – a lot of the money you put into your house, you won’t necessarily see back dollar for dollar when it comes time to sell.

Yes – wide plank oak floors make my heart skip a beat, but will it be reflected in the sale price of my house when I put it on the market?? Um… nope. Especially if I had to rip out perfectly good tile to put in my perfectly perfect floors. The struggle is real, people!

Whether you’re definitely going to put your property on the market,  or are unsure what your real estate future holds,  I wanted to take a moment to share with you some things that you CAN do -home space lifts- and feel good about, because these things are inexpensive, and will drastically enhance the appearance of your home.

What’s more,  you can feel confident that you’ll see any money you spent home space lifts reflected at the closing table when it’s time to sell.

 photo Curb Appeal_zpsnx0pimpa.jpg

1. Curb Appeal

This is the first impression that buyers (or guests) are going to have of your home, so let’s make it a good one! Like it or not, your garden/yard/entryway is going to influence how buyers perceive your home.

Make sure your yard is immaculate. Add fresh mulch to bleached out beds, and fill in sparse places with native shrubs or grasses. Plants work wonders for “livening” up a space (pun so intended). If you have a screen door that’s seen better days, remove it – add new house numbers and a fresh coat of paint on the door and you’ll be ready to welcome guests in style.

 photo Espresso Shot_zpsv6rxuzw6.png

2. Interior Paint

Paint is the cheapest, fastest way to transform anything – and your living room is no exception. Choose a neutral hue that compliments your flooring and decor – varying shades of gray, greige or decorator’s white are all great choices.

Tip: Make painting a fun family activity! Hosting a painting party can be a creative way to engage kids, friends and  family members (and beautify your home in the process!)

 photo Espresso Shot 1_zpsln9zcah6.png

3. Storage Unit

If you’re definitely putting your home on the market, you’re definitely going to want a storage unit. Get all your occasional and seasonal storage (holiday decorations, serving platters, off-season clothes and those 3 spare strollers) OUT of the house and make what remains look organized and neat.

 photo Thanks 1_zpshd6zi24w.png
4. New Linens

For staging and in design, nothing gives off that hotel/ spa-like feel like fluffy white towels and crisp white bedding. The bottom line? Go get new white towels.

Go.

Now.

 photo Thanks 2_zpsavbutlr2.png
5. Replace Outlet Covers and Switch plates

Many times, outlet covers and switch plates get crudded up with time, use and sometimes, just with crud. This extends to yellowed smoke detectors and ceiling fixtures too. Many times, just swapping out tired looking fixtures or hardware with new (not necessarily expensive) ones will be all your room needs to feel refreshed.

I personally know you through our fabulous Femfessionals community in Ft. Lauderdale. But for my readers who haven’t met you yet, tell us a little bit about yourself and your professional background…

I was raised on Long Island, NY before earning my degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton. After graduation, I worked as a fitness trainer at New York Sports Club and wanted to continue working in the health industry. So, I decided to go for my doctorate in Chiropractic from Life University.

I especially love working with children and pregnant women and I am actually one of the few chiropractors in Broward county certified in the Webster technique, which restores balance to the pelvis in regards to labor and birth.

genafinals-135

While I have not yet birthed any babies personally, I get to spend my days around babies and kids near and dear to my heart.  My post-graduate training in pregnancy and pediatrics helped me create an office full of babies, giggles, smiles, (sometimes tears) and laughter.

As a health care provider, there is nothing more rewarding than having a mom bring me her infant to have his or her spine checked. I have been invited to attend home births of my patients and blessed with the pleasure of taking care of up to 4 generations in a family at a time.

genafinals-81

How did your business get started and what makes it unique?

I picked up a ton of experience right out of school, before moving to South Florida, in Pennsylvania. My practice at the time saw between 500-600 patients per week, with 40% of the patients being pregnancy and pediatrics. Hiking and skiing are some of my favorite hobbies, so you can imagine it was not an easy choice to move to the flattest and hottest state in the country.

I moved to South Florida to be closer to my amazing family.

At first, I worked as an office coverage doctor in 11 different practices. I got to experience different office protocols and techniques, while figuring out which community I wanted to work in, which was really helpful.

I decided to open an office in Plantation, since it’s close to the action of Ft. Lauderdale, close to my family and full of families I would be able to take care of in my office. I rented space out of an existing practice and spent my first three years down here making connections and building relationships with the awesome South Florida people. In May of 2015, I finished the build-out of a new, modern, state-of-the-art, spacious facility to better meet the growing needs of my practice!

11350564_10153195379805589_1958936156765490259_n

Congratulations! That’s a huge step! Why should MBMom readers become or recommend you patients?

The most common ailments to make their way through my doors are kids with frequent ear infections, constipation, torticollis and bed wetting.

genafinals-94

We provide a non-invasive, gentle service, through chiropractic care. We have seen many of our patients come off of medication, reduce their dosages of prescription drugs, smile more often and avoid surgeries.

While there is a time and place for medical intervention, our office strives to focus on that which allows our patients to be a better expression of health.

We work with the body as a whole, in helping you eliminate the effects of chemical, physical and emotional stresses you face on a daily basis. The mission at Dr. Gena Chiropractic is to motivate and inspire people to live life to its fullest potential!

Chiropractic is a fantastic venue to make this happen.

genafinals-121

What exciting things are coming up at your practice?

The most exciting news regarding our practice is the recent move we took in May of 2015. We recently purchased CLA Insight equipment which we will be incorporating into our examinations and re-exams going forward.

The Insight scanner is a Certified Space Technology tool which helps detect hidden patters of stress and tension in the body, allowing us to better care for our patients.  We have been training in the use of this new equipment and are excited to track our patients’ progress and shed light on the effects our lifestyle has on our bodies.

Now that you’ve lived in South Florida for some time, what do you love most about our area?

While moving to South Florida was never my first choice, since coming down I have been thriving!

What’s not to love about winter down south?

I can drive to my yoga class with the windows down, on the way to the beach, in December! There are also tons of outdoor events going on most of the year. I love that the people of South Florida tend to be more active and spend lots of time outdoors and at the beach. It’s great to be able to wear flip flops all year long.

I also love that there are so many networking events and business opportunities, many of which are health-centered down here. Moving to Florida has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

MOMpreneur Monday: Frocktail Design & Décor

MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.

Happy Monday Modern Boca Moms! Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.

MOMpreneur Monday Frocktail Design & Decor Modern Boca Mom

Today’s featured MOMpreneur is…Efua Ramdeen , founder and owner of Frocktail Design & Décor in Boca Raton.

Frocktail Design & Decor Modern Boca Mom

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became such a fabulous designer…

I was born in West Africa and raised in the Caribbean, where I met my wonderful husband, Jason. We now raise our beautiful 16 month old son, Blaise, here in Boca Raton. I’ve been in the Interior Design business for almost 15 years and absolutely love what I do!

Frocktail Design & Decor Modern Boca Mom

It all started when I was 6 years old. I had a passion for decorating which I harnessed in my aunt’s home decor boutique. I would watch her keenly and want to participate, as she adorned household items with fabric and frills.

“I knew then that this is what I wanted to do with my life.”

The women in my family come from a long line of seamstresses, artists and creative gurus, so I was destined. I moved from the Caribbean to Florida in 2000 to fulfill that passion and obtain my degree in Interior Design, from The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

Now that I am a mom, I am even more driven in my Frocktail design career. I help families create sanctuaries and spaces that they can be proud of and enjoy, which I can absolutely relate to!

Being a new mom in business means finding strengths I never knew I had, and overcoming obstacles in a whole different way. I pride myself in ‘making it all work’ and I feel lucky that my job as a designer is also my creative outlet.

Frocktail Design & Decor Modern Boca Mom

How did your business get started? What challenges did you face as a MOMpreneur?

I’ve been multitasking my design talents for years; working within residential and commercial design firms while decorating for my family and friends.

I formed my own company ‘Frocktail’ in 2009 with the hope of creating my very own design business; bringing fresh and innovative design concepts to my clients, and having each project uniquely express their tastes and tell a special story.

In a world of HGTV, BRAVO and DIYs, I’ve found that people still need a lot of guidance in order to create cohesive spaces, no matter what size the room.

Frocktail Design & Decor Modern Boca Mom

What is truly unique about Frocktail Design?

My roots in West Africa, island living and sojourns throughout Western Europe have credited my multi-faceted design sensibilities, but what makes my design services unique, quite honestly, are my clients.

My only signature is a successful project that represents my clients’ goals and a teamed vision, while making the process informative and enjoyable for them. My associates and I manage projects big and small, from traditional and transitional to contemporary styles.

Frocktail Design & Decor Modern Boca Mom

Why should MBMom readers hire you to shape the design of their living space?

So many people are intimidated by interior designers. They have a fear of being judged by their home, their own designs, or lack thereof.

They assume that the process is not affordable while at the same time, they overspend on ‘not so ideal’ design. I would like to give moms and families the opportunity to have a professional by their side, providing knowledge and resources for them. I tell all my clients that I work with them and not for them; whatever their design needs may be.

I think new Moms will love our portfolio of children’s rooms and themed spaces which are especially fun to work on because creativity can run wild.

Frocktail Design & Decor Modern Boca Mom

What exciting things are coming up with Frocktail Design?

After being a featured Interior Designer for the 2015 American Red Cross designer show house in Palm Beach this past March, I look forward to participating in next year’s show house, as well as being featured on several other design blogs and online tutorials later on this year.

What do you love about living and working in South Florida?

There’s nothing better than the coastal air, diversity of cultures and lifestyles in South Florida. Everyday is a beautiful day!

5 Strategies to Help You Feel Like Your Best Self

We all love our kids and would do anything for them. But let’s be real. As MBMoms, we could all use a little treat just for us to feel like your best self!

Here are some awesome ways to treat yo’ self:

Feel Like Your Best Self

Even if you live far from any local wineries, having a backyard winetasting is always a fun way to pass the time. You can get enjoyable options almost anywhere at various price points.

We recommend reaching for a few different bottles of the same type of wine, such as a collection of different Zinfandels, and then comparing them. This can give you the chance to really learn the nuances within a single type of wine that can get lost when you have access to only one bottle at a time.

Feel like your best self

This is something you could totally do by yourself (MBMom doesn’t judge!), but it might be more fun if you invite some girlfriends over. You can each bring a bottle to keep the costs down, and lazy summer evenings are the perfect excuse!

  • Beauty Counter Makeover

We all get into a makeup routine, but it’s easy to fall into the trap of wearing “dated” trends.

Don’t worry! We don’t think you’re sporting your grandmother’s rouge…yet. Still, an easy (and free!) way to revamp your look is to head to your local beauty counter.

Many brands, such as Chanel and Hourglass, offer makeovers at their respective department store counters. These are done by real makeup artists who are often more than willing to provide beauty tips and techniques that will keep your face looking current and fresh, even if you don’t buy. Sephora is a great resource, too. Appointments are complimentary with a $50 minimum purchase, and you get access to lots of great product lines.

  • Mommy Makeover

This one is a little more of an investment (OK, it’s a lot more). If you’re like many moms, you may have some body bumps and bulges that weren’t there pre-baby and that won’t go away no matter how much you diet or exercise.

Feel like your best self

Thanks to the miracles of modern medicine, it is now possible to tighten up and slim down with a combination surgical procedure called a mommy makeover. Usually, the procedure includes a tummy tuck, breast enhancement, and liposuction, all meant to address areas affected most by pregnancy.

According to the website of Fort Lauderdale plastic surgeon Dr. Zoran Potparic, a tummy tuck — the most strenuous of the mommy makeover procedures — requires about 1 to 3 weeks of recovery time. That may seem like a long time, but after taking care of your family for years, you deserve to be doted on for once. The treatment does cost several thousand dollars, but most surgeons offer financing options. If you can fit it into your lifestyle, there’s basically no better way to pamper and feel like your best self.

  • Get Crafty

You may have fond memories of making macaroni gifts for your family back in elementary school, but crafting can be so much more than that!

Many people find hands-on projects relaxing, allowing you to focus on something completely different from wrangling kids or desk work. With so many talented craft-dedicated bloggers out there, going full Pinterest on your home is easier than ever.

If you aren’t the artistic type, try organizing instead. Organizing areas of your home like the pantry or your kid’s closet is the perfect option for those want something that’s a bit more practical while still having a dramatic change of pace from your everyday routine.

  • Dedicate an Afternoon

Sometimes, you really just need an afternoon to yourself to do whatever you want to do, to feel like your best self. No kids. No husband. Just you and whatever you need to be good to yourself (and catching up on your running around does not count!).

Feel like your best self

Some ideas would be a mani-pedi with friends, hanging out at a local coffee shop to read that book you never have time for, or going to the pool or beach without the family in tow. The afternoon is yours; do whatever helps you enjoy your “you time” with no chance of interruption.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your family is to remind yourself who you are. You are overdue to feel like your best self.

So, treat yo’ self. You deserve it.
