As parents, we all know how important summer learning is. There will be no “summer slide” in my house! Luckily, Modern Boca Dad and Mayor, Scott Singer, agrees. He recently issued a proclamation declaring that June 3 through August 9 will be designated as Summer Reading 2019! This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.” Residents are also welcome to participate in the over 100 programs and classes for all ages at the Boca Raton Public Library (BRPL). I can definitely appreciate some free summer fun!
A Universe of Stories
Sponsored by the Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library, this year’s space-themed activities and classes will inspire all ages to become reading stars. The festivities blast-off with a free Kick-Off Party on Saturday, June 8, from 10:00 a.m.−12:00 p.m. at the Spanish River Library. The whole family is invited to play games, enjoy food, listen to a live DJ, enjoy a Galaxy Bubble Party and much more!
Summer Reading enrollment begins on June 3 for kids, ’tweens, teens and adults. Children (ages 9 and under) receive a free reading log, bag and bookmark when they enroll. Then, they can collect a new prize each week for reading. ’Tweens (ages 10–12) and teens (ages 13–17) will receive a prize upon enrollment. Then, they are placed into drawings for gift cards at the end of the summer when they log their reading time online. Adults will get a free book bag when they enroll. They are then eligible for an end-of-summer drawing for local attraction tickets when they log the books they read at bocalibrary.org.
Prevent the “Summer Slide”
Public libraries like BRPL play a critical role in providing a bridge for education and academic skills for students over the summer months. This is to help prevent the “summer slide,” during which students may lose educational achievements made over the previous school year. To combat this, the Boca Raton Public Library is presenting an exciting summer of educational initiatives!
The Boca Raton Public Library is a place of learning and discovery for residents of all ages. Adults are also encouraged to participate in Summer Reading to set a good example for their Boca kids. Reading helps adults improve memory, learn new things and enhance well being. We can all use that, right?
Get your kids signed up today, Boca moms! We all need something to do when it’s raining outside, right?
