Top Pediatricians in Boca Spill Must-Have Parenting Secrets

Top pediatricians in Boca Raton, Doctors Chad Rudnick and Paul Gilbert, are no strangers to answering the most commonly Googled questions for parenting healthy kids. Every day at their local office, they block out an entire hour for their patients to conduct wellness check-ups and answer parents’ questions the way docs did in the good ‘ole days. Thecarry black “house call bags” for actual house visits, keep their cell phones on them 24/7 in case parents have questions via text or email, and spend a TON of time focusing on wellness.

More wellness = healthier patients in their book!

Between their ultra-personalized office visits and 24/7 “pediatrician-in-your-pocket” on-call status, it’s no wonder the docs at Boca VIPediatrics have quickly become top pediatricians in Boca. “We want to empower parents by bringing back the old-fashioned relationship young patients had with their doctor. So, we encourage them to reach out anytime. Any questions they forget to ask in the office, they can always email or text directly to us 24/7,” says Chad Rudnick, MD, founder of the nation’s first pediatric smart office, Boca VIPediatrics.

top pediatricians in Boca

The Johns Hopkins-trained Dr. Gilbert knows that parents of babies and toddlers are not the only ones who rely on their pediatrician for healthy development. As “Camp Physician” at Camp KenMont/KenWood, one of the nation’s premier sleepaway camps in the Berkshires, he’s also accustomed to bonding with school-aged, adolescent, and teenage patients. “The relationship between the pediatrician and a school-aged child or teenager is what allows us to maintain their health. This helps them grow into successful young adults,” says Gilbert.

Read on to see what secrets top pediatricians in Boca, Dr. Rudnick and Dr. Gilbert, are spilling regarding healthy parenting!
  1. The Secret To Just About Every Sleep Question Is…

Consistency. We get asked this question every single day. While our office goes into more detail about methods, products, etc. to help our patients (and parents!) sleep, the bottom line is always: Be consistent.

Human beings (especially babies) are creatures of habit. We tend to want to go to bed at the same time each night, wake up at the same time each morning, and sit at the same spot at the kitchen table for dinner. Once you’ve spoken with your pediatrician and your partner about a routine that works well for your family, stick with it. It sounds easy in theory, but sometimes life gets in the way, which is the difficult part.

You may have to decline plans that interfere with naptime or bedtime, and you’ll likely catch some flack from family or friends who don’t understand why you’re running such a tight ship. Once you get the routine down and have a consistently good sleeper (at least 2 months), then it’s possible to bend the rules for a special occasion like a family dinner or vacation.

  1. Don’t Google; Ask Your Pediatrician

When it comes to your child’s health, we don’t want you guessing or crowdsourcing. Every time you Google your child’s symptoms, chances are your diagnosis will be WRONG. If you ask your other parent friends or post a question to a Facebook group, you may even be given information that is potentially dangerous. You should never have to wonder when it comes to the health of your child or avoid seeking the help of your pediatrician because it’s after-hours or a weekend.

top pediatricians in Boca

At Boca VIPediatrics, there is no waiting until the next day or Monday morning when you have a concern about your child. All of our families can reach us 24/7 to ask questions if and when they arise. These top pediatricians in Boca Raton also do virtual visits where parents can send photos or videos of coughs, bumps, rashes, and even the inner ear with our otoscope attachment for the iPhone to check for ear infections. We always offer same day sick visits. You should always be able to reach out to your pediatrician or their office 24/7. Googling symptoms usually causes more harm than good.

  1. Fevers Are Not The Enemy

Unless you have a child younger than 3 months, fevers are actually not as bad as you think. A fever is considered anything over 100.4 degrees and remember, forehead thermometers are widely inaccurate! In most cases with toddlers and older children, the level of fever is not concerning, it’s how the child is acting.

We’ve seen children with a fever of 104 who are playing soccer in our office. And, we’ve also seen some pretty miserable 101’ers who can’t get out of bed. A fever is your body’s natural reaction to fighting off infection, so it can actually be a good thing.

top pediatricians in Boca

We treat based on how the child is feeling, NOT the number on the thermometer (Remember that this does not apply to babies less than 3 months of age). 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, our patients can email or text us to ask about dosing to make sure you are giving your child the proper amount of fever reducer.

  1. Antibiotics Will Not Treat A Cold

The most common illness that a child will get (over and over) is the common cold – which originates from a virus. Antibiotics do not treat colds! Because these top pediatricians in Boca Raton are not fans of over-prescribing or over-medicating, they like to try natural remedies first. In fact, we never guess whether your child has a cold or infection. We’re one of the only offices in South Florida to utilize a simple nasal swab which tests for over 30 different viruses and bacteria. That way, we’re only prescribing an antibiotic when it’s 100% necessary to get your child better, faster.

top pediatricians in Boca

  1. Trust Your Own, Inner Parental Instincts

Nobody knows their child better than mom or dad. We like to listen intently to parents when they have a concern, because their intuition is usually spot on. That’s why we offer house calls and urgent care 24/7. We received a FaceTime call a few nights ago from a worried mom who heard a concerning cough from her 2-year-old daughter. As it turns out, she was right to be concerned! It was croup and we were able to get medicine called into her 24 hour pharmacy right away. We’ve treated late night ear infections, stomach bugs, coughs and rashes. Our office has even saved patients from ER trips by being available on our cell phones at all times. Every patient has our numbers and when it’s urgent to them, it’s urgent to us.

  1. Every Child Is Unique

It feels like as soon as you have your first child, suddenly everyone comes out of the woodwork to give you advice. Beware of “experts” who are not experts, or professionals who try to put your child “in a box.”

Remember we are all different people with different hobbies, interests, and personality traits. Children develop at their own pace with their own set of likes/dislikes. They will grow up to change the world in their own unique way regardless of when they first start to walk, talk, or ride a bike. It’s important to work with your pediatrician and discuss milestones and development to be sure that your child is tracking as expected.

top pediatricians in Boca

When an issue does arise, we are able to facilitate further evaluations with pediatric speech, physical, or occupational therapists so our patients are able to get back on track faster. Milestones aren’t just about babies and toddlers. School aged children (teens included) are also tracked to make sure they are reach their potential in the classroom.

This is something I know we all want for our Boca kids…and that’s no secret!

Learn All About the NEW Baby Trend Going Viral in Boca Raton

Soon-to-be parents, you’re in the right place for welcoming a new baby into the world! Boca Raton is booming and there is no shortage of baby-friendly places, businesses and professionals to be a part of your family’s “village” and help your Boca baby arrive in style! But there is one particular Boca baby trend for expectant parents that is causing a stir like no other.

No, it’s not a new baby swing or some futuristic diaper. It’s the ability to have your “pediatrician in your pocket” 24/7 with Boca VIPediatrics.

Here’s why new/expectant parents are losing their minds for this service you won’t find anywhere else in Boca…

  1. You Can Call/Text/Email Your Pediatrician 24/7

Since you’ll be the one solely responsible for raising your tiny human, you’re going to have questions…a LOT of them! Sure, you could Google them or ask your mommy friends. Maybe even be brave enough to post your question in a Facebook moms’ group (please don’t!). Or, you could simply send a text or email to your pediatrician and receive a REAL answer back in minutes. Not only will this save you valuable time and give you incredible peace-of-mind, but nights, weekends, holidays, whenever…you always have your pediatrician in your pocket.

Trust me, your baby will thank you later.

  1. House Calls, YES!

Your baby’s very first newborn exam (once you leave the hospital) will be performed by your pediatrician AT YOUR HOUSE. That means, after you give birth, instead of putting your 3 or 4 day old baby into a car seat and driving to the doctor, the doctor comes to YOU. Dr. Rudnick and Dr. Gilbert spend as much time with you as needed and get to know your family in the comfort of your own home.

3. No Waits…Ever for this Boca Baby Trend

Because Boca VIPediatrics has a very limited number of patients, you’ll never have to wait in a waiting room with your baby. In fact, when you come to the office for those 9 scheduled visits during the first year of life, you’ll have the whole office virtually to yourselves. Boca VIPediatrics only schedules one family at a time to avoid your precious bundle being exposed to unnecessary germs. This is your chance to feel like a “Boca Beyoncé” and be on top of this Boca baby trend. You know you’ve always wanted to! 😉

  1. Personalized, Personalized, Personalized

Did I mention the service is personalized? You’ll have a pediatrician and BFF wrapped into one when you receive instructions like, “Text me when you get home from the hospital, so I know you all made it home okay,” when you’re discharged with your newborn. Visits at the office last up to an hour or more with your doctor. They run the entire appointment to ensure you have all your questions answered. If/when you need to see a specialist, lactation consultant, or need lab work/imaging, you’ll receive priority appointments and expedited results from the concierge team at Boca VIPediatrics. The old-fashioned service and Boca baby trend has generated praise-worthy buzz around town from so many moms & dads. They are raving about having a “small town” pediatrician who knows their family like the back of their hand! Just check out their Facebook reviews!

5. Go To The Office…Or Don’t

Let’s say you have a question about diaper rash or a funny noise your baby keeps making. At other pediatric offices, you’ll need to schedule an appointment to speak with your doctor (if you can even get one). At Boca VIPediatrics, you can text a video or photo along with your question and opt for a virtual visit instead. You’ll receive a diagnosis and treatment plan back in minutes!

Boca baby trend

6. A Backstage Prenatal Tour Like No Other

You’ll be treated like royalty when you tour Boca VIPediatrics’ immaculate office, have a sit down meeting with Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Rudnick and ask all of your questions. You’ll learn about all of the amazing amenities available to VIPs and how fun of an environment they make the office for kids with bubble parties and virtual reality (for older kids). Keep an eye out for the pregnancy surprises waiting for you at your arrival!

Boca baby trend

  1. All-Inclusive, Affordable Membership

Similar to a heath club, you’ll pay a monthly membership equivalent to the cost of a daily Starbucks. This includes all visits, vaccines, 24/7 access, house calls, and everything your baby needs in their first year of life. There are no co-pays or surprise bills and you can even request insurance claim forms to be reimbursed by your insurance company for the visits.

So you can actually be paid back by your insurance company for going to Boca VIPediatrics!

8. Registry Reviews

The Mommy Recommended, Pediatrician Approved Registry Review program is an awesome perk for expectant parents. You can request a registry review and the team at Boca VIPediatrics will go through it with a fine-tooth comb, making sure each product is safe and efficient.

9. Add It To Your Own Registry!

So many expectant parents worry about the perfect crib, stroller, or swaddle blanket. How awesome would it be to REGISTER for 24/7 access to your pediatrician? You can add a membership gift certificate to your baby registry so you’ll have a pediatrician in your pocket for your first 365 days as a new parent! Grandparents, take note!

10. The Best Soon-to-Be Mom/Dad “Boot Camp” in Town

Be sure to check out the hottest baby class in town for expectant parents: BABY UNIVERSITY! It will keep you and your partner laughing all while learning how to prepare for baby. It’s the only class in town taught by pediatricians, so you’ll be hearing the most up-to-date information and recommendations from The American Academy of Pediatrics. Classes are held at Boca Regional Hospital. Spots are very limited and classes always sell out! Be sure to register early. For upcoming dates and more information, visit www.BocaVIPediatrics.com/BabyUniversity.

So, how do you secure your baby a spot for this VIP style of care?

Modern Boca Mom to the rescue…I’ve got the steps right here:

The Importance of Wedding Photography in Boca Raton

Deciding on wedding photography in Boca is often a stressful and trying job. However, it’s well worth it when you finally find the right photographer for you!

Even though #modernbocadad and I are 6 years post-wedding (plus one child later), hiring a solid wedding photographer AND videographer was the best decision we made…besides each other of course. 😉 If you are planning on having children, you want to make sure your wedding memories are properly documented. I tell every bride I know to never skimp in this area!

The Importance of Wedding Photography in Boca

And, I recommend Naomi from Sweet Memories Photography without hesitation here in South Florida. She’ll make your wedding photography in Boca decision EASY!

Here’s what she has to say about the process: I’ve personally had many of my family session clients ask, “where were you when we were getting married?” Then, they go on to share horror stories about their wedding photographer. They of course decided not to hire them for future milestone sessions.

www.facebook.com/sweetmemoriesbynaomiphelps

It always breaks my heart to hear these stories because your wedding day is just the first of many amazing stepping stones into your future together! Being a lifestyle photographer and a past bride myself, I believe that couples should have their special day documented to its fullest. Your photographer should capture every sweet moment to be treasured and shared throughout the years.

wedding photography in Boca

I don’t know about you, but I still look at my parents’ wedding album to this day. The photographs froze the genuine smiles, hearty laughter and fun dances! It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to look at those images and feel like I was there…like your children inevitably will.

Hiring the perfect photographer for your wedding day ensures that a moment won’t be missed. You’ll be able to share that day with your kids, and they’ll be able to share it with theirs, and so on and so forth. Your wedding day, happiness, and love will never be forgotten.

We Entered to Win $529 for Our Florida 529 Savings Plan

Last month was the end of an era for me as I stepped down as President of the Flagler College Alumni Board of Directors. Having served on the Board for two terms, it was time to pass the baton and serve the college in new ways. Coincidentally, my resignation coincided with National 529 Day (which I’ve written about before on the blog). Along with continuing to stay involved with our alma mater, #moderbocadad and I have decided that a Florida 529 Savings Plan will be a key part of our family’s, specifically our daughter’s, future.

What can a Florida 529 Savings Plan do?

The Florida 529 Savings Plan can be started at anytime and only requires a $25 initial deposit to open. Even if you can’t save for your child’s entire college education, starting something is always better than doing nothing. The funds in a Florida 529 Savings Plan can be used for any qualified higher educational expense, including:

  • tuition
  • room & board
  • textbooks
  • graduate school and much more

This gives families extreme flexibility to use the funds as you see fit. Should those needs change during his/her college years, individuals are free to adjust as well. (See the website and FAQ for more details.)

Each investment option, such as their popular age-based option that automatically allocates contributions based on the age of the child, is independently run by professional investment managers. From more aggressive to more conservative options, you have as much control as you want over how much you invest and where it’s invested. What YOU Need to Know About Your Toddler’s First Dental Checkup

Oh toddlers. They are loud, demanding…but oh so darn CUTE! #dailybocaavery had the most adorable little toddler smile when she was younger. But once I saw that toothy grin (a few hundred times), it dawned on me that it was time for my toddler’s first dental checkup.

So, I made that appointment, but didn’t know what the heck to do next. How do you prepare a toddler for their first dental checkup?

I called on Modern Boca Mom’s favorite pediatric dentist, Dr. Drew Popper of Junior Smiles, for the advice I never got when I needed it the most…

  1. At what age do you recommend coming in for your toddler’s first dental checkup?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends visiting the dentist at the time of the first tooth’s eruption, but no later than 12 months of age.  While there are only a few teeth in the mouth to evaluate, many dental anomalies can be identified at an early age.

In addition, this allows your child to build a relationship with their dentist. If they have any trauma or cavities in the future, this familiar relationship leads to an easier appointment.

toddler's first dental checkup

  1. What are some ways to put your child at ease if they are nervous about visiting the dentist?

I like to explain to the children that we are just brushing their teeth, just like they do at home with their parents. At Junior Smiles, we have iPads with games on them, toys and a children’s library. This puts my patients at ease. In the back, there are televisions and kid-friendly walls. It does not feel like your typical doctor’s office.

We take a great deal of time to allow each child to warm up to us so that they have a positive experience and look forward to coming back in the future.

toddler's first dental checkup

  1. What can parents expect from their toddler’s first dental checkup?

Parent’s are always allowed to accompany their child at Junior Smiles. Once we bring the child to the back, we give them a tour of the office showing off our open bay clinic and tooth brushing station.

Then, we review everything we will be completing during their initial visit. This includes a cleaning, radiographs (depending on cooperation), oral hygiene instructions, a new patient exam and fluoride application.

toddler's first dental checkup

To prevent early childhood cavities, parents first have to find out their child’s risk of developing cavities. They also need to learn how to manage diet, hygiene and fluoride to prevent problems. However cavities aren’t all that parents need to learn about their child’s dental health.

Our age 1 dental visit lets parents discuss:
  • How to care for an infant’s or toddler’s mouth
  • Proper use of fluoride
  • Oral habits, including finger and thumb sucking
  • Ways to prevent accidents that could damage the face and teeth
  • Teething and milestones of development
  • The link between diet and oral health

Finally we will make recommendations to an orthodontist if necessary and answer any questions.

  1. What do you do to put parents at ease…who are as equally nervous as their child?

I understand that many of our parents are more nervous than the child at their first visit. To accommodate them, we explain everything very thoroughly before their initial visit to make sure parents understand how we will be proceeding. We understand that parents place a great deal of trust in us.  Therefore, my priority lies in establishing a positive, open line of communication with parents.

  1. Any other tips?

Create a sense of excitement about your child’s first dental visit!

toddler's first dental checkup

While many adults have had negative and traumatizing experiences at the dentist in the past, it is important to recognize that we do not want to pass those fears on to your child. If we are able to start off in a positive environment at your toddler’s first dental checkup, we can use many preventative measures to make sure they have a great experience going forward.

Great advice, as always, Dr. Popper!

Which Sport is Right for My Kid? How to Find Out

Behind-the-Scenes: A Day in the Life of Boca’s Best Pediatricians

They say you have to see it to believe it. Especially when it comes to the best pediatrician in Boca who keeps South Florida parents raving since the office’s inception nearly 3 years ago! With one of the most exclusive waiting lists in town (that’s just beginning to opening up), it’s no wonder Boca VIPediatrics remains at the top of any parent’s list when choosing a pediatrician.

A concept designed BY busy parents, FOR busy parents, this pediatric smart office is way more than your average doctor’s office…it’s an experience! One that you have to just see to believe. Indeed there is a better way to take your children to the doctor.

I got a sneak peek behind-the-scenes tour of Boca VIPediatrics with none other than Boca’s best pediatrician (now pediatricians, plural!), Dr. Chad Rudnick, MD and Dr. Paul Gilbert, MD. Join me as we walk the VIPediatrics red carpet, go behind the velvet rope and find out just how these doctors make magic happen for Boca kids every day through a concept that is blowing the minds of busy parents.

Upon entering the office, you’ll find a beautiful empty waiting room. (Wait, what?) That’s because Boca VIPediatrics only schedules one family at a time for well visits to the office. Your child gets a completely private office visit, with no annoying wait times, and no sick kids anywhere in sight.

Often referred to as the “no-wait room,” we wait for you to arrive, instead of the other way around.

Suppose you don’t know whether you need to come to the office or not. We’ve all had those parenting moments of, “Should I take my kid to the doctor?” You don’t have to guess with these docs. Why? Because you can email, text, or call their cell phone directly 24/7.

That can’t be true, right? Oh, but it is. Within seconds of texting or emailing your question such as, “What should I do about this rash?” or “We have a fever of 102,” or “Can I send you a video of his inner ear so you can check for an ear infection?”, you get a response from the best pediatrician in Boca. And yes, their office has the tools and smart office capabilities that can turn your smart phone into an otoscope or stethoscope to screen for ear infections or listen to coughs from anywhere you might be!

If you do arrive at their office location in central Boca, you’ll be taken into one of the 3 exam rooms: The Rock Star Room, The Movie Star Room, or The Sport Star Room. VIPs may also find little surprises along the way like their favorite movie playing on the TV, a favorite snack, a virtual reality headset to help ease their anxiety, or even an impromptu bubble party.

Bubble parties are our jam!

Once it’s time for the exam to begin, you’ll find that Dr. Rudnick/Dr. Gilbert have no opening act and no understudies. Meaning quite simply, there are no other staff members poking or prodding your child. You get the best pediatrician in Boca running your entire visit, whether they’re administering vaccines or personally escorting your child to the lab, every single time.

Sometimes, the exam comes directly to you. That means the best pediatrician in Boca comes to your house for a house call visit (black bag and everything!). So rather than taking your newborn out and about to a doctor’s office, or your sick older child when it’s after hours and you’re trying to find an urgent care that’s still open…you’ve got a doctor on call for you and in your pocket 24/7.

A sensible light-saber battle before heading out to a house call on May the 4th (AKA Star Wars Day)

When it comes down to it, your family ends up having a real relationship with your pediatrician, so you have someone who knows your child when it comes to what’s most important…their health. And, these Boca kids aren’t complaining about receiving the VIP service (nor are their parents).

The house calls always remind me of the personalized style of medicine I set out to practice. I get to do my exam in the comfort of the family’s home and really get to know everybody.

With longer, unhurried appointments, we get to know our VIP families really well. This is the style of care practiced back in the old days, when the pediatrician knew the whole family!

The cornerstone of any “best pediatrician” title is the reviews. With a slew of 5 star Facebook reviews from parents of kids of all ages, it’s no wonder families come from Ft. Lauderdale, Wellington, Palm Beach, and even Orlando (!!!) for their child’s care with Boca VIPediatrics. And with the convenience, access, and personalized level of VIP care, the reviews are not just ‘5 star’, they are glowing.

But don’t take my word for it! Check out their overwhelmingly rave reviews HERE.

I’m being told spots are going very quickly! To find out more about your child becoming a VIP with Boca VIPediatrics, fill out their online contact form here (www.bocavipediatrics.com/contact) or call (561) 923-9635.

NEW Swim Program Introduced at South Palm Beach County YMCA

Summer is here mamas…despite the recent *bonus* cool front we received last weekend. That means swimming pools and splash pads galore to cool your kids off during the next 6-8 months of sizzling weather in South Florida! We are so excited to partner with the YMCA of South Palm Beach County (basically, the Boynton and Boca locations) to talk about swim safety AND the new YMCA swim program they just introduced.

NEW Progressive YMCA Swim Program

NEW Progressive YMCA Swim Program

The YMCA’s NEW Progressive Swim Program will help local parents make sure their kiddos learn essential water safety skills. This can open up a world of possibilities for children to satisfy their curiosity safely.

Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury. It is a necessity, especially in Florida.

The YMCA swim program is arranged by progressive stages and children are placed in lessons according to their skill and age. Within the levels, swimmers will learn skills such as personal safety, breath control and other fundamental swimming skills they will be able to use throughout their lifetime. Here’s how the classes are divided:

NEW Progressive YMCA swim program

What about the instructors?

YMCA swim program instructors are nationally certified and their training includes:

  • CPR
  • AED
  • First Aid
  • Oxygen Administration

You’ll never have to worry that your child’s instructor isn’t anything less than top notch and professional.
