The Posh Parent’s Guide to Conquering Palm Beach Polo

If you’re a native to South Florida, then you know that society and fashion trendsetters mark their calendars early for the ultimate, “must-do” Sunday champagne brunch and polo at the International Polo Club (IPC) during the high-goal Palm Beach polo season. And the scene just got brighter with the introduction of the stylish, new Lilly Pulitzer Patio at The Pavilion.

2016-02-14 13.58.44

We spent our Valentine’s Day this year at the IPC along with friends April Golightly and hubby, Kevin. They were pros having spent a similar day at the polo grounds last year.

We had QUITE the Sunday Funday. The (pink) champagne was flowing and the brunch options were seemingly unending. Let’s just say that all the convincing I had to do to get #modernbocadad to join me went out the window the minute he saw the brunch spread. And I think his pastel shirt looked rather good on him.

Don’t our guys clean up nicely?

Lilly kicked its brunch up a notch this year, creating the ultimate Palm Beach polo scene, with chic, vibrant pink, yellow, and orange Lilly tablecloths, napkins, and embellished centerpieces. The outdoor covered field-side dining area was the perfect place to watch the fierce action on the field, as well as score a few celebrity sightings during the match. Hello Tony Danza.

And, if you happened to splash a drop of your mimosa at brunch, well it’s all part of the iconic brand’s legacy that inspired local socialite Lilly Pulitzer to create the original prints that were fashioned into colorful shifts 45 years ago. #fashionfact

Palm Beach Polo

Here’s how parents can conquer Palm Beach Polo this season…

Palm Beach Polo Modern Boca Dad & Modern Boca Mom

Step 1: You gotta convince your man to join you. Thank goodness football season is over! Buy something stylish and pastel or in a Lilly Pulitzer print for you and your #modernbocadad to wear. Source a hat or fun headpiece/fascinator. Don’t forget your sunglasses!

Step 2: Get a sitter (or NOT- we’ll tell you why below!) and invite some fashionable friends to join you for polo on a seasonal Sunday at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Step 3: Book tickets to  the Lilly Pulitzer Champagne Brunch if you want to go all out…or Stadium Seating if you’re looking for a more economical option.

Step 4: Eat, drink and take in an action-packed polo match in (hopefully) beautiful Palm Beach weather!

2016-02-14 16.50.57

It’s really that simple and fun! And I, of course, love a theme and any excuse to dress up.

2016-02-14 16.37.21

If you want to forgo the fancy brunch and bring your kids with you to a polo match (there are Lilly outfits for little ones too!), then here’s another great, option that I definitely plan to take advantage of before polo season ends.

The winter polo season at IPC is open to the public, and every Sunday there is desirable stadium seating available (kids age 12 and under are free). Self-parking is just $5.

2016-02-14 16.42.34

The field even boasts fun activities like bounce houses to keep your kiddos occupied during the match. And there is plenty of champagne to be had on the stadium side for the adults, not to worry!

Ticket Prices: January-April, Sunday Polo Matches
  • $30 – North and South Stadium Seating
  • $40 – Center Stadium Seating
  • $150 – Box Seats (limited availability)
  • $5 ─ Parking on-site at the Stick and Ball field (behind the stadium)

You don’t need to dress up (but come on, go for it!) unless you are styling with the brunch and champagne crowd. Jeans, a colorful shirt, or a sundress is acceptable attire for the sideline folks.

Grab your family and enjoy an exciting afternoon outdoors watching the world’s most elite polo players passionately compete during the winter polo season!

MBMom Tip: Flats or wedges are ideal shoes to wear, as grass is the major ground cover at polo.

Polo is a really fun way to spend a Sunday, especially if the weather is sunny and cool! You can have your “Pretty Woman” moment while stomping divots (champagne in hand) or simply sit back and enjoy an exciting game of polo. FYI- the horses get REALLY close to you on the stadium. I loved it!

Meet the 2015 Child Actors of The Grinch at the Broward Center

The daily routine for the child actors of The Grinch (who play Cindy Lou and Annie Who in this year’s national tour of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, coming to the Broward Center December 15-27, 2016) is quite different from the life of a normal grade schooler.

         child actors of The Grinch

Rachel Katzke is a fourth grader who plays Cindy Lou Who and Stephanie Ticas, a fifth grader, plays Annie Who. The girls have very busy schedules while on tour. We had the chance to speak with both child actors of The Grinch and find out about their daily routines…

Chid Actors of The Grinch: Daily Routines

9:00 AM: Because we are usually up late after the evening show, we sleep in every morning. After waking up, we eat breakfast and get dressed.

10:00 AM: We usually start tutoring each morning at 10. At each theatre, we have tutoring in a room that is dedicated to our educations called “Schoolville.” We spend four hours there each weekday (except on the days we travel) and work on our schoolwork. Our tutor, Gina, works directly with our regular teachers and gets our homework and class work assignments from them. Since we don’t have much time, we work hard to finish everything we need to.

2:00 PM: After school we have lunch and either relax in our rooms or do something fun like swim in the hotel pool until it’s time to go to the theatre. Once in a while, we go on a field trip with our tutor. In Detroit, Michigan, we visited the Ford Museum. In Appleton, Wisconsin, we visited the History Museum at the Castle and learned about Houdini. In Jacksonville, Florida, we visited the zoo!

child actors of The Grinch

5:00 PM: Before every show, our moms get us ready for the show. They put our hair in something called pin curls and wig caps. This makes our hair ready for our amazing wigs!

child actors of The Grinch

6:30 PM: One hour before showtime, we meet our wrangler at the stage door. She takes us to our dressing rooms where our makeup artist puts on our makeup and wig. Our dresser – we have a different one in each city – helps us in to our costumes.

child actors of The Grinch

7:25 PM: Five minutes before the show, the entire cast does something called a “whoodle.” One person in the cast calls out a motivating word like “energetic” or “spirit.” We then put our hands all together in a circle and yell out the word together. This gets everyone excited to perform. We are really like one big family. Then it’s SHOWTIME!

child actors of The Grinch

7:30 – 9:00 PM: It is so much fun to perform in front of thousands of people. The cast members look out for each other on stage. Working with professional adult actors and actresses as well as the directors has helped us learn so much about acting, singing and dancing. It is also so much fun.

child actors of The Grinch

9:05 PM: After getting out of our costumes, we meet our moms at the stage door. We usually eat dinner after the show since we are hungry and much too energized to go to bed. Sometimes we watch a movie or TV show after the show or we might go for a swim if the hotel has a pool.

child actors of The Grinch

11:30 PM – midnight: We go to bed late on tour. But, since we are so tired, we sleep really well every night!

The Grinch broke box office records for two consecutive years on Broadway during its holiday engagements at the St. James and Hilton theaters in New York. Since then, more than 1.2 million theater-goers across America have been delighted by this heart warming holiday musical, which the Gannett papers hailed as “A genius of a show! A total delight for both kids and adults.”

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical features magnificent sets designed by John Lee Beatty and costumes designed by Robert Morgan, inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original book, while the Music and Book of Mel Marvin and Timothy Mason breathe new life into this timeless story.

The 2015 production is directed by Matt August and choreographed by Bob Richard, based on the original choreography by John DeLuca and originally created by three-time Tony Award® winning director, Jack O’Brien.

The Bump will be presenting The Pump and Dump comedy show performance in Florida, complete with giveaways, prizes, and most importantly, VALIDATION for beleaguered moms and dads in the South Florida area.

The Pump and Dump: A Parentally Incorrect Comedy Show and Night Out, For Once is much more than a traditional comedy showcase full of observations on parenting.  It is an honest and true night out for parents: an interactive evening full of big laughs, original music (songs like “Eat Your F-ing Food” and “When I Die I Wanna Come Back as a Dad”), audience participation (games include “Stump the Expert” and “Bumpo: Bingo for Breeders”), awesome prizes (WINE!) and catharsis.

The Pump and Dump comedy show

The Pump and Dump comedy show audiences are filled with every kind of mom, parenting style, dad, delivery, adoption story, sleep training method, brand of diaper, and advocate under the parenting sun. The show has turned into a singular, mommy and daddy-war ending event where everyone in the room laughs together about their common experiences as parents.

For almost 3 years, comedian/musician Shayna Ferm and her sidekick MC Doula (Tracey Tee) have been giving moms this hour and a half of commiseration. For the two creators and moms of 3 children under 5, the show has been an additional baby – a full time job, exhausting, inspiring and nurtured.

“We fell in love with The Pump and Dump because it makes an audience full of new moms laugh, cry and feel validated with their parenting experiences,” said The Bump Site Director Julia Wang. “Parenthood is filled with joy, love, and surprises. Not every day goes as planned and the show, like our website, app, and magazine, supports parents through the beautiful chaos of parenting—with laughter.  We couldn’t be happier to sponsor their nationwide tour.”
