Meet Your Grilling Kryptonite: Omaha Steaks

Sponsored Omaha Steaks WM

It’s no secret that I can’t cook. I wrote more about my lacking skills as a housewife here, but I can shop for killer ingredients, especially for grilling out.

And HOW GREAT was this weekend for grilling out???!!!  I LOVE YOU FALL FLORIDA WEATHER!

I was thrilled when Omaha Steaks reached out to Modern Boca Mom to stop by the Boca Raton store to pick up a Gridiron Griller Combo package to test out with #modernbocadad.

It included:

  • 4 (5 oz.) Triple-Trimmed Filet Mignons
  • 3.5 oz. All-Natural Steak Seasoning
  • 4 oz. Napa Cabernet Glaze

We invited my parents over for an impromptu Saturday night dinner and we were all extremely pleased (me especially with that Napa Cabernet Glaze…like BUTTER). The food was delicious!

6 Things Parents Should Consider Before Choosing a Preschool

Choosing a Preschool in Boca

My daughter is not even two yet, but I’m already feeling the preschool PRESSURE. Seriously.

What school are you zoned for?

Have you toured any preschools yet?

Are you going to do private or public school?

Seriously. I thought I was leaving this pressure behind by moving to Boca from New York City where you literally have to apply days after (or maybe even before?) your child is born! Apparently not.

So I reached out to Sarah Savitch, Director of Early Childhood at Grandview Preparatory School, for some well…direction. I asked her what MBMoms like you and me should really consider when choosing a preschool in Boca Raton.

Choosing a Preschool in Boca

Here are her Top 6 Items to Consider Before Choosing a Preschool in Boca Raton for Your Son or Daughter:
  1. Safety:  Tour the facility to make sure that your child will not only be taken care of, but also that the facility a safe place. Is the school secure? Is the playground away from public view? What about the equipment– is it in good condition and up to code? What about proper supervision on the playground and in the classroom? Seeing any safety lapses during a tour is a red flag for parents.
  1. Staffing credentials, ratios, and past problems:  Find out what ratios the facility observes, what certifications or degrees the teachers and assistants have, the number of years of experience the staff has, and if the facility or staff has past citations with the Department of Children and Families. Visit the DCF website ( to find this information.
  1. Curriculum:  It is important to ask what type of curriculum the facility follows. Do they follow an organized curriculum or do the teachers have full range of what to do in their classrooms? Also ask what the school’s philosophy of education is. Does it apply to what you want your child to learn and how you want them to learn? Will your child be successful there?

Choosing a Preschool in Boca

  1. What other parents are saying:  Word of mouth is the BEST way of knowing about a facility when choosing a preschool. Other people will tell you why they liked a school or the reasons why they did not. Gather information from others, but be sure to visit the school and come to your own conclusion. Keep in mind that what works for one family does not always work for another, and always keep an open mind.
  1. Get a taste of school life:  If available, visit or take a class at the school you are considering. For example, Grandview Preparatory School offers thrice monthly “Mommy & Me Classes” that expose little ones 10 months old and older to the school facilities and the teachers they would have in preschool.
  1. Proximity of the school:  How far do you want your child to be from you? Consider if you would like your child to be closer to home, to your work, to your spouse’s work, or close to grandma and grandpa. Think also of the everyday route you drive: Where would you like your child’s school to be? Also, consider that if a “wonderful” school you love is far away, it may seem like a good idea at the time– but when life becomes hectic it may not be the greatest choice.

Wow, I never even considered half of these. Forget Santa Claus– this is the list that I’m making and checking twice!

Choosing a Preschool in Boca

Here are Ms. Savitch’s MOST IMPORTANT words of advice on choosing a preschool in Boca:

If you ever tour a facility and you do not get a good feeling from the start, don’t fool yourself; you never will feel comfortable.

Choosing a preschool for your child is a personal decision; choose the school that is right for your child and for your family. Remember that schooling isn’t just about academics—it’s about developing your child, keeping them safe, and inspiring them to be their best selves every day.

MOMpreneur Monday: Exambook

MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.

Happy Monday Modern Boca Moms!  Welcome to our next installment of MOMpreneur Monday on MBMom, highlighting Florida businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow Mommas.

Today’s South Florida Mompreneur is Paula Akhatov, founder of Exambook, an online math tutoring service.

Exambook Tutoring Service

Math. I’m dreading the day when #dailybabyavery comes to me with a homework problem and I (or Google) literally can’t help her. What’s an MBMom (with what feels like LIFELONG pregnancy brain) to do?

Enter a math graduate from FAU, wife and mommy (to a now 1 year old little girl)…oh yes AND the founder of Exambook, online math training for high school, SAT prep and pre-college students.

Exambook Tutoring Service

How did you come up with the idea for Exambook tutoring service, Paula?

I’ve been teaching math for over 11 years. I came to the US as an immigrant in 2007 and since then I’ve been a tutor at FAU, an instructor at a private college and Financial Aid Adviser for the Keiser University Online division. This is where I got the idea to tutor students online.

I started working on this idea three years ago. In the meantime, I met my husband and life took a new turn. From planning a wedding, traveling, then expecting our first baby, my priorities shifted.

Exambook Tutoring Service

I found myself as a woman who had no desire to do anything else but be a full time mommy. Fast track 4-5 months and I quickly learned that if I wanted any piece of my pre-baby life back– like cooking, visiting friends, gym and date nights, I needed to balance everything and get really good at it.

I looked for examples of working moms that still made time for their kids, like Ivanka Trump. I wanted to set a better example for my daughter; I needed to show her that she can be a mother and enjoy her career.

So keeping my daughter in mind, my best solution was to finish what I had started.

So becoming an entrepreneur was the path you chose. What do you love most now about what you do?

Exambook was created to fill the need for better learning.

I love to teach and more importantly, I believe I have a gift to teach. There is nothing like the look of a student that “gets it”. We offer a service that is fully online, with the students being able to choose their own time and instructor. The flexibility of having a session at any location from home, to the library, to a Starbucks shop, is what makes it so convenient.

What makes your business different from other online tutoring services?

What makes it unique is the parent account created to monitor the student’s schedule of sessions and even purchase credits for them. Again, this feature comes from years of experience and concerned parents phone calls.

At Exambook tutoring service, we understand that classroom teaching may not work for everyone.

As a mom, I now understand the priority we give to our children. I honestly can’t wait for the day I will teach math to my daughter, and probably her classmates too.

Moms, if you feel overwhelmed with homework in the near or far future, we are here to help!

How do you see your business evolving going forward?

For Exambook tutoring service, I am looking forward to expanding our curriculum. We tutor students at all levels and exams. I would like to see some students prepare for SAT and ACT with us.
