MOMpreneur: n. defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur.
Welcome to our latest installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow mamas!
Today’s featured Modern Boca MOMpreneur is Rachael Allen, Owner of The Power Of 3 Strengths, a children’s coaching program.
Tell us about your background and why you decided to start your business…
My name is Rachael Allen. I am originally from the UK (just west of London) and I relocated to Boca Raton 5 years ago with my husband, due to his employer. My sister and her family live in Boca, so we went from 2 decades of living on different continents to literally being next-door neighbors!
I built my career in Human Resources across different industries and locations. After having my children in 2010 and 2012, I decided to work part-time so I could have the flexibility to spend time with my children while also maintaining my career. Currently, I’m employed as an HR Director for a small but global staffing company where I kept my part-time job when we relocated to the US.
During my quest to improve employee engagement and business performance, I became a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach. This is not about lifting weights or personal training though! It essentially means that I use Gallup’s online assessments to uncover the unique ways that an individual thinks, feels and behaves. Then, I deliver coaching and workshops to increase their individual performance and create high-performing teams.
“Over the years, so many people have said to me, ‘I wish I had done this years ago!’.”
So you decided to launch a business…
In March 2020, like many others, I felt stressed, worried and that I was failing. Not only at being an HR Director and a Virtual Teaching Assistant, but a wife and most importantly a mom! I decided that as a family, we needed to ‘play to our Strengths’. This is something that I am hugely passionate about in the workplace, so I decided to use it at home too.
Gallup has a Strengths Assessment aimed at 10–14-year-olds. It is specifically aimed at that age group to support the transition from Elementary to Middle School. I took my own children through the assessments: Chloe my synchronized swimmer has high Presence, Achieving and Caring. Sam, my baseball mad son, has high Dependability, Discoverer and Caring. Me and my husband were able to use their unique Strengths to better understand how to motivate them and what is important to them as individuals.
It was eye-opening for us as just a small tweak in our language would make a huge difference in their motivation to do their virtual schooling. It was also fantastic to spend some time with each of our children talking about what makes them uniquely talented.
During virtual happy hours and catch-ups with friends, I shared what I was doing. A lot of my friends asked me if I would do the same for their children. We created a pilot group and have taken their feedback and designed a unique program called The Power of 3, a children’s coaching program! I am now incredibly proud to be working with parents and children both locally and in the UK. I am also a proud business partner to my children’s school. Plus, I volunteer with 2 non-profit organizations that bring the power of entrepreneurship to young people.
What’s truly unique about your children’s coaching program?
Almost all coaching and education for children focus on correcting children’s weaknesses–I want to build on their strengths.
I think the unique times that we are living through has meant that more than ever, we need to build confidence and resilience in our children. Just like adults, they have suffered during this pandemic. Now the world is opening back up, the common narrative is that everything going back to ‘normal’. The last year has been proportionally – compared to adults -huge for our children. ‘Normal’ might seem a little intimidating, frightening or scary to them. The Power of 3 shows 10–14-year-olds what they are naturally talented at. These are their Superpowers!
What exciting things are coming up for The Power Of 3?
On Wednesday June 2nd (2021) at 2:00 p.m., I am running a free live webinar for parents. It will give them an understanding of how to build on their children’s natural talents and the value of developing Strengths.
What do you love most about living and working in South Florida?
Being so close to family! I love living next door to my sister in paradise! Florida has been a wonderful place to live and work after being abroad for so long.
