Today’s featured Modern Boca MOMpreneur is Jenn Jordan and Nikki Lang, sisters & creators of Happy Lil One children’s clothing.

Tell us about your background and how Happy Lil One got started?

We are Jenn Jordan and Nikki Lang! Sisters and moms, which was the impetus for us starting our business.

Jenn: Like most moms, I wear a lot of different hats. I work to juggle my children along with my full time job, and launching the business (a ball definitely gets dropped here and there). Happy Lil’ One has been journey for us and started from Nikki and I trying to solve for our own biggest issues with children’s clothing.

Nikki: I have a background in sales, but left my job to work full-time for HLO last year. I just gave birth to my second child in mid-June, and since there is no such thing as maternity leave when you’re launching a business, my plate has been full! But the nice thing about partnering with your sister is that we always have each other’s backs and recognize when one of us needs some extra support.  We have found that having a co-founder that you can rely on and trust is invaluable in starting a new business.

What challenges have you faced in creating the children’s clothing line Happy Lil One?

After two years of perfecting our product and building a brand and audience, we finally launched our business in March 2020. However, the timing just so happened to coincide with the mandatory quarantine, which was issued for practically the entire country!

People were losing their jobs and it was a time of major uncertainty for most. We were definitely worried about launching during the pandemic. And, of course questioning how to move forward for a couple of weeks.

“What we ultimately found, however, is that the mom community is strong and supportive (no surprise there). Moms that we knew supported our business and referred friends to check us out.”

We have also found that since the pandemic hit, people are much more conscientious of supporting small businesses. This has been a silver lining throughout this whole ordeal.

What is unique about Happy Lil One children’s clothing?

Our clothing was born out of our own needs. Jenn’s kids drooled a lot. They were constantly wet and their shirts had to be changed multiple times a day. Or, they had to wear a bib which covered their cute outfits. In lamenting over this, we wondered why there wasn’t more functional clothing made for babies and kids that were fashion forward and easily transitioned through activities and the daily needs of moms and babies.

Along with cotton constantly staying wet, we thought about our other biggest issues with our children’s clothing. It regularly stains after one wear or it fades easily in the wash. Plus, fashion seems to be an afterthought.

We wanted to solve these problems, so we developed an athleisure clothing line for babies and kids. Happy Lil’ One clothing can withstand a child’s daily adventures while still looking fashionable. Our clothing is stain-resistant, odor-resistant, quick drying, uva/uvb protective and wont’ fade in the wash. HLO clothing is also fashionable and unbelievably soft. As adults, we swear by our durable and comfortable athleisure. So, why wouldn’t we want the same for our kids?

Why should Modern Boca Mom readers become your shoppers?

Our customers’ well-being and peace of mind are the top priority for Happy Lil’ One. Our goal is to make mom’s life easier through our functional childrens-wear. We also want to bring a little more joy to her everyday life.  We know how hard being a mom is and how much focus goes to the children (rightfully so). But, the mission at HLO is to keep moms at the forefront of our minds in everything we do and create.

We also focus on families who aren’t customers through our give back program! Once a child has outgrown their HLO clothing, parents can send them back to us. We will sanitize and refurbish the clothing and donate it to families in need in Colombia, S.A., where the clothes are manufactured. Our customers can feel good about supporting a brand that is actively giving back to families in need. We want them to know that the clothes they purchase will eventually end up with a child in need.

Readers can use the code: BOCAMOM20 to receive 20% off their first purchase!

What exciting things are coming up for Happy Lil’ One?

Our toddler line is coming! HLO is in the final stages of development for our toddler line, which will be launching in the fall. We can’t wait to share the new styles with our customers! We have tested the clothing on our own children and we can say they truly withstand almost anything!

What do you both love both about living and working in South Florida?

Being born in central Florida, we are lifelong Floridians. Jenn: I have been living in South Florida for 18 years and Nikki has lived in South Florida on and off for the last 16 years (we are both University of Miami Hurricanes!). We love being close to the beach, the endless outdoor activities and South Florida’s style and aesthetic.
