Welcome to our latest installment of MOMpreneur Monday, highlighting businesses and brands that were founded by female entrepreneurs and fellow mommas!
Today’s featured Modern Boca MOMpreneur is Kelly Hill-McCormick. She’s the owner & creator of Pause at Swinton in Delray Beach, where you can enjoy yoga, relaxation and facials!Hi Kelly! Why don’t you fill us in a little bit on your personal and professional background…
I have been a licensed esthetician for 30 years. I started out with my own facial and nail business, but when my daughter Chloe was born, I chose some of my favorite clients and invited them to come to my home for their services. My goal was always to be home for my children.
A few years later, my son Dustin was born and my husband and I decided that we should concentrate on one business. So, I slowly stopped doing skincare services and focused on our glass blowing business, K.C & S Enterprise. Soon, I was behind the torch myself as we were trying hard to keep up with our rapid growth. We made our garage our shipping room. Dustin was extremely attached to me as a baby, so I carried him in a pouch as I packed orders and took care of the business. Our screened in patio was set up for 4-5 glass blowers at a time. I remember Chloe waking up late at night and wandering out to the patio to see her mom and dad blowing glass.
Unfortunately, my husband got lung cancer and passed away when Chloe was 14 years old and Dustin was 9. With his death, the business died too and I had to get very serious about making money to support my family. I worked at various Med Spas for the next 10 years.
I have raised my kids to know that anything is possible and that dreams do come true. As their mother, I wanted them to know that they are the creators of their own lives. They knew I believed in them and in return they believed in me.
Tell us about the process of starting Pause at Swinton in Delray Beach…
Truthfully, my current business has been in the making for many years. I was always thinking about this perfect little spot where people would love to come and just be. This was always in the back of my mind.
During one of my longer meditations, the full idea came to me along with a sense of urgency. I quickly began looking for the perfect location and started making plans. It has been a whirlwind, and I must admit I did not do anything the conventional way. I would say I felt my way through it, relying on my intuition and instincts to pull things together. Of course I had to have the proper licensing, equipment, supplies and a creatively decorated place for my clients.
The hardest part for me was licensing and other logistics. And the one thing that I knew I wanted to offer was skincare. Aesthetics has been my main source of income for the last 30 years. However, the original reasons I was doing facials was long gone. It started to become a tiresome way to spend my days. Working in Medical Spas had taken all of the creativity out of it for me. Naturally I was anxious to begin doing a handful of facials a week and find my way back to my soulful beginnings.
What is unique about your business?
In the beginning, there were so many people who didn’t even think a business like mine was viable. At the same time, there were others who had a similar concept, but were always too afraid to “go for it”. I don’t believe I have come across another business that has the same unique combination of services and offerings as Pause.
Pause at Swinton in Delray Beach truly happened organically. Everyone who has become a part of the “Pause Family” was placed into our lives for a specific reason. My children and I really decided to go with the flow of the universe and allowed it to guide us every step of the way. Nothing was set in stone and our business is still constantly evolving. I think that sets us apart from the rigidity of other business models and allows us to truly think outside of the box. That makes the possibilities for the future endless.
In addition, we are truly “hands-on” business owners. We are there every day giving this our all and we have been doing so since before we opened. Too many times I’ve heard that my relationship with my children- and theirs with me- is so unique and special. I couldn’t have done this without my number one supporters- my family.
Why should our readers become your customers?
At Pause, we have something to offer everyone. Currently we have yoga classes, a meditation room, a collection of my favorite books, unique gifts, essential oils, facials, and a lounge and “bar” where we serve specialty coffees and exotic tea/botanicals as well as “Lite Bites”. Anyone from all different kinds of families, mothers and fathers, college students…etc. can find something they enjoy.
People of all ages can find relaxation and positive energy here. Whether they’d like a facial or to partake in a yoga class. Or maybe sit at the bar or in our lounge and sip on one of our specialty coffee drinks or teas. I truly believe Pause is a place where people can come together and make meaningful connections. I’ve seen friendships form, businesses partner together, and relationships flourish all within our special space. Our goal is to make everybody feel comfortable and welcome!
What exciting things are coming up for Pause at Swinton?
We are really hoping to have a consistent yoga schedule soon. It’s so rewarding to introduce people to things they can enjoy and better themselves with. As more people are becoming aware of Pause, different members of the community have their own unique gifts to offer us.
We are very excited to be starting a new AcroYoga, or “Partner Yoga” class. There are also several different speakers who have graciously offered their time to share their passions with our patrons. We are always open to new ideas and welcome feedback, so I have a feeling there will be many new and exciting things to come!
What do you love about living and working in South Florida?
South Florida has been my home for over thirty years. I love that my parents and in-laws still live in East Boca and that my kids grew up under the sun and were able to have their extended family so close by. We live less than a mile away from Pause and there are so many opportunities to experience new things every day.
