When Should You Consider an In-Home Tutor or Academic Coach for Your Child?

When I launched Modern Boca Mom, I knew that little ol’ mom me could never personally be 100% representative of ALL the types of moms in our area. I originally brought on several contributors to give this blog a broad voice, hoping to tap into the psyches of all the crunchy moms, twin moms and fit moms in Palm Beach County. (It was great! Go figure that a couple of them went on to become even bigger bloggers and MOMpreneurs than me! #success)

Modern Boca Dad and I also have an only child, a girl. So, I definitely know I’m not an expert when it comes to topics like sibling dynamics or “toys that are popular with boys.” I’m also relatively new to school and all of the “education” (for both parents and students) that goes along with it. She has been doing well in Kindergarten so far…I think? But to be honest, I’m not that confident I would know if or when it was in Avery’s best interest to hire educational help like a tutor or academic coach in Boca Raton.

Kindergarten! How did this happen?

That’s why, as Modern Boca Mom, I’m grateful to have access to many fantastic local experts. Since we’re on the topic of educational support and coaching, I’m excited to announce that I have partnered with The Support for Students Growth Center and Dr. Eric Nach, Ph.D., M.Ed., A.S.D. to walk me through some of the vetting process, if and when I should ever need the help.

Their state-certified and licensed tutors and counselors specialize in helping children who are struggling to learn or who have exceptional needs. And, they’re located just across the medical plaza from our longtime friends at Boca VIPediatrics! Let’s dive right in to my interview, shall we?

When is the right time to hire a tutor or an academic coach?

As a parent, here’s what you should look out for:

  • When homework becomes a “nightmare”
  • A student’s participation in the classroom starts to decline
  • When anxiety and avoidance over going to school starts to develop
  • Your child does not have time for fun
  • When your child’s stress of learning impacts the entire family
  • Your child is falling behind
  • When you just can’t battle with your child over schoolwork any longer

Lastly, when you’ve honestly tried everything you can think of. I know we’ve all reached that breaking point at one time or another as a parent.

What makes your way of tutoring and academic coaching more effective than other local services?

Since 2012, The Support for Students Growth Center tutors, counselors and licensed therapists have worked with thousands of students with a wide variety of learning, behavioral and perceptual challenges. We have successfully helped them to reach their potential. Each tutor and academic coach in Boca Raton and surrounding areas works one-on-one with each student to adapt a plan that meets a student’s learning style, cognitive abilities and behavioral needs.

We use various “research-based practices” and “scientifically-based” approaches to strengthen a child’s:

  • Executive functioning skills
  • Higher-order thinking skills
  • Self-monitoring and self-regulation skills
  • Memory retention and acuity
  • Attention awareness and control
  • Visual processing skills
  • Auditory processing speed and accuracy
  • Phonemic awareness
  • Language comprehension
Have you found a private or group coaching setting to be preferable?

Group settings are how traditional schools operate. Typically, the lesson being presented is directed at the middle ability level of the class of students. All of our Highly Qualified and Certified “Exceptional Student Education” teachers and Licensed Mental Health Counselors will tutor or coach your child one-on-one in your home or in a local library, so it will be all about them.

Many students who “struggle” with learning or could stand to be challenged more, perform much better when the educator teaching them truly understands how they think, function and learn and is able to focus on their specific needs.

MBMom Tip: Get the same tutor or academic coach in Boca Raton and surrounding areas each session so they get to know your child’s needs, goals, and abilities.

Well there you have it! If your child struggles to learn or has exceptional needs, private, in-home tutoring with an academic coach in Boca Raton (or the surrounding area) could be your answer. Reach out to Support for Students Growth Center at 561-990-7305 or visiting their website.
