I have a love/hate relationship with family portraits. My entire childhood, my mother would drag my sister and I over to the Sears Portrait Studio at the Town Center Mall (RIP) to take our Boca Raton holiday pictures. We did this even AFTER I graduated from college. But now that I have my own daughter, I totally see why it was important to her.

Having a visual record of your kids growing up, even when they’re in their twenties, is priceless to parents and grandparents. Now, I always seek out a professional like Sweet Memories Photography to make sure that our investment each year pays off in the best way possible: with amazing holiday portraits of my whole family.

It’s not easy to wrangle everyone, especially on a date in the throes of football season. 😉 But after 3 years of photos, my family knows the drill. Here’s how I organize our holiday photo shoot each year:
1. Pick a theme
2016 is an election year AND we live in Boca Raton, so nautical/red, white & blue it was! We’ve worn holiday colors, Lilly Pulitzer patterns, sequins…you name it. Have fun with your theme, but make sure to coordinate so you’re all in the same color family at the very least.

2. Choose a location
I’m a huge fan of The Waterstone Resort and Marina and thought that the views would really complement our nautical wardrobe theme. There are also indoor location options that we could take advantage of in case of rain. This is South Florida after all! We called the Waterstone about our Boca Raton holiday pictures ahead of time and they gave our family permission to shoot on property.

3. Pick a date that works for most
There are only so many days in between Halloween and Christmas, so pick a shoot date in advance. You can also work backwards by finding out which dates your photographer is available. It narrows the field exponentially.

4. Grab some props!
My sister is pregnant with her first child, so of course we had to highlight that in this year’s holiday photos! We ordered some beach balls and Santa hats and had a lot of fun integrating those props into our shoot.
